What would be the best way to purchase a domestic airline ticket? One of the many travel websites or through a travel agency or straight from the airline. My trip is several months out. Thanks!

well since you have a few months why dont you check all of the above and see who is offering the lowest priced ticket??

I usually check Kayak.com for fairs... they compare many sites. If you're really pushing to save money, you could always call the airlines with your best price and see if they can beat it.

Travelocity will tell you when a fare drops according to your parameters. Sign up and they'll email you any changes. But, like Expedia, they don't deal with all airlines.

Gotta recommend Kayak.com too... it beats the heck out of Travelocity and others for finding the best deal and being comparatively free of ads... works a heck of a lot faster too I've found...

For domestic, I recommend using search engines such as Kayak.com and Sidestep.com to do initial searches to see who flys where and when you want. I also watch Orbitz as they have some exclusive fares.

Then, once I know the flight/s I want, I sign up for a fare watch at Airline tickets, Discount Airfare, Helping you find Cheap Flights At FareCompare and through Yapta - What is Yapta?. Farecompare notifies you in advance of a published fare change (generally 1-6 hours) so you can be prepared when the new fare is in effect. Yapta will search exact dates/flights for you, and in addition once you've purchased, if the fare goes down will notify you so you can check if you're eligible for a refund or voucher for the difference - even tells you how to get it (with phone numbers and the right phrases to use).

I usually end up purchasing directly from the airline once the above methods show an acceptable price for me.

some airlines (certain discount airlines, foreign carriers, charters) will not show up on all or sometimes any of the search engines. I find it helpful to find an airport or tourist website for your destination. You can almost always find a list of all the airlines servicing that airport, and see if you are missing any airlines. Then you can go directly to their websites.
