Just received this info in my monthly miles update from US Air:

Mexico policy change
Due to changes in government regulation, starting on September 13, 2010 we can no longer accept U.S. dollars at any of our ticket counters in Mexico. We can still accept credit cards and Mexican pesos.

While I understand the basis for the Mexican currency exchange rules, it seems like it is going to have some serious negative affect in tourist areas.

let me try my comments again as the SB cyber Nazis deleted my last comment. The issue of the cash exchange will not deter tourisim as much as the constant, unending MURDER of cops and civilians by the lawless, corrupt drug cartels that now run the entire country of Mexico. Oh I know, the wonderful Mexican people...blah..blah...blah..bottom line, I will never travel again to anywhere in that country and give them my YANKEE dough until those wonderful Mexican people stand up and do something to stop the carnage in their country. It's only a matter of time until these thugs take over a hotel on the water and roll up a bunch of innocent tourists!

Mexico's violence will continue as long as our big neighbor to the north continues to supply the weapons and demand the drugs. Mexico is doing what it has to do -- the history is that these things get worse before they get better -- that's what the currency controls are all about.

Okay, this is about drugs and crooked officials. I was beginning to think Mexico knew something about our US $$ that we don't know.
