Advise on Nikon D200 Lens

I have a question for those using the Nikon 105 D (the non-vr macro version).

My AF MICRO NIKKOR 105MM 1:2.8 D lens is about 4.25 inches long to 5 about inches at it's maximum length. It does change size when focused.

Thanks Saltywater. I figure there was a reason for the longer port suggestion, but wasn't sure after I learned that the vr doesn't extend.
