My husband and I just got NAUI certified and are looking to go on a dive trip soon. What is a good place for a beginner diver? I’ve heard about Bonaire, but you have to go for at least a week and it’s hard for either of us to get away for that long. I’ve heard that Cozumel has some strong currents sometimes and may not be the best place for beginner divers. I just wanted to get some more input, from people who have been to these places. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the board. It would be helpful to fill in your profile so people know where you're traveling from.

The FL Keys might work for you, as the travel should be easier than getting to most islands so doing a shorter trip is reasonable. There's plenty of easy diving.

Welcome to the board.

For long weekend type trips, I like the Florida Keys. My preference is from Key Largo down to the mid keys. A really excellent way to do your first dives is in a local quarry. I know there is not much to see but it gives you the opportunity to spend time learning to prefect your skills. This is especially true if you can find some experienced divers to go along with and have them assist you.
By the way, if you would fill in your location in your profile I would bet there are SB locals who would be more than happy to buddy up for your first dives.

Where do you live?

I agree with Al... pretty hard to give advice if we don't know where you live!

The Keys would be great if you're on the East Coast, but not so great if you're on the West Coast.

Let us know where you're at, and we'll try to help you the best we can!

Cozumel is great for beginner divers. You just ride along with the currents and follow your DM. My wife was just certified there and we had a blast.

While Cozumel does have currents, it is appropriate for novice divers. Just remember to tell the DM of your experience level and enjoy the drift diving.

I've updated my profile. We are planning on going for about 4 nights, so I think that would be long enough for a trip to Cozumel. Any adivce on Hotels or dive shops in Cozumel, and the Florida Keys? This is a great forum/website. Thanks for the advice.

For Cozumel it depends on what you are looking for. Do you want an all-inclusive plan? Does being close to town a priority? Will you be eating out alot? How many dives a day? I have been there 3 times in the past two years, trying out different places. When my girlfriend and I went last September, we stayed at the Cozumel Palace (softest beds, great food and service). Stayed at the Iberostar twice...nice but far from town, cattle boat dives. If I was to go by myself, I would stay at the Scuba Club...basic, dive-dedicated, no frills.

Check out http://www.tripadvisor.com/ for reviews. If you need some help in arranging a trip, look into http://www.bayadventures.com/

I have used them and they are great.

And by all means, get to Coz. You won't forget it.
