Hello

I am an open water diver with about 20 dives logged. I am going to be in the Bay Islands, or near there, in a few weeks. Can anybody recommend diving locations/outfits in the Bay Islands? I am interested in liveaboards, but not opposed to day trips. How much should I expect to pay for each and what are some can't miss locations? Thanks for any info!

Mike

If your are interested in a live aboard, the only one I am familiar with is Aggressor Utilia...check them out at Aggressor: Utila, Honduras ....there are also lots of good day operators out of West End on Roatan. Another alternative is the all inclusive shops like Fantasy Island, Coco View and Anthony's Key.

"Near there" isn't really near there. Either you is or you aint. If you're on the mainland, search here for ways to make the crossing with sanity and within your budget. Okay, a certain measure of sanity, anyway.

There is only one liveaboard in the Bay islands, the Utila Aggressor. They do weeklong trips (as does most every other liveaboard in the Caribbean), Saturday > Saturday. If you want to klnow how much you might pay for diving, liveabaords are not the best option.

but not opposed to day trips.

Now you're talking. CoCoNut Tree, Bananarama, Native Sons, West End, and my favorite, Subway Watersports. Roatan scuba diving snorkeling dive courses Bay Islands Honduras

:search:

Ahh, the hard and ugly truth: at 20 dives, you pretty much so can't miss wherever they will take you. This is an oft heard question that elicits a knowing smile from old trimers. They will take you where they will take you. Depending upon your abilities and after a careful look at the wind, wave and weather- they will take you to the most practicable sights possible.

Anybody that says any different is just blowing smoke.

You'll have a ball, enjoy.

What Doc A. sez. I have to chuckle a bit when I see the Utilla Aggressor anchored near the same dive sites we're diving, except we're paying maybe $22. or so a dive. Lots of good dive ops on West End, plenty of accomodations to choose from. I like Posada Arcos Iris and Posada da las Orquideas (Roatan - Posada Las OrquÃ*deas)

A seldom mentioned feature of Orquideas (aside from it's fairly new and very nice) is it's location, about a 10 min. easy walk north of West End area. It's more open and breezier. Don't need a/c (extra $$), bugs are not an issue and the "Barking Dogs & Roosters Band" doesn't seranade you all night. Sea Grape Plantation divers is right next door, a good outfit to dive with. Of course you have to put up with this sorta accomodation--but what can you expect for around $45. a night? (Paradise!!!!!!!)

Oh and I did my open water cert there a few years ago. Roatan is a great place for new or experienced divers, dozens & dozens of great divesites that are a 5-15min. boat ride away. That's just my opinion of course...but I'm right. :eyebrow: // ww

I have dived and lived on Roatan and Utila, Cayos Cochinos is the way to go, check out this link http://www.plantationbeachresort.com/

The diving around Cayos is very good, much better than the aformentioned islands. I stayed at the resort about a month ago and had the whole resort to myself, sweet, what a deal for $110.00usd+taxes per night all inclusive including 3 boat dives per day!!!!!

The coolest thing I saw diving was a group of 6 lobsters hiding together in a crevice, next door to another gang of 4 hanging out in the same coral bommie, the DM keeps the site a secret from the locals.

Check out this website for Utila info Utila Official Site - Utila, Bay Islands, Honduras - Tropical Island Paradise.

If you want travel to Cayos for a few days, check out this link

Rusty's Sailboat Tours & Charters - Utila, The Bay Islands, Honduras

Diving on Utila will cost you at least $25.00 per tank, Roatan is a little bit more, food and lodgings cost a lot more than Utila. Note, there are frequent power failures on Roatan, so if aircon or fans are important, choose a place with it's own generator (Pura Vida, Fantasy Island ect) When I was on Roatan, I dived with Pura Vida Dive Center.

Best regards :)
