Has anyone had any experience with a 22mag powerhead in the Gulf? I only want it for personal protection against the big toothy things, but I want to make sure I don't just make him mad if I have to use it. It seems reasonable to me that it should be enough but I don't know. Seems that most everyone else is using the big stuff, 223,44, etc

Thanks for the help

Shaun

The 22 mag is not big enough for the large ones. It does work well for the large freshwater game....:D

It may deliver enough thump to inform the offender you are not a meal but it will not create enough damage to terminate the threat if that is your intended use.

Remember that for any power head it is not the bullet that does the damage ... it is the gas ball. A 22 puts out a tiny charge and will not even slow down anything that is big enough to attack you. 357 Magnum is just about the smallest that you should take with you. A 357 Max has just the same amount of power as the 44 mag but is hard to find. 223 is really picking up in popularity in the last few years. Probably due to the availability of cheap ammo.

Whichever you go with, blanks are the best way to go. You don't have to worry about back pressure from the bullet expanding the case and jamming your powerhead.

Well not exactly what I was wanting to hear - I bought this down in Panama City about 6 hours away from me. The owner of the shop assured me it would be enough - he even showed me a picture of a shark he killed with the same caliber PH. Maybe he just put a slick sales job on me... I should have asked here first - darn impulse buys

For what it's worth, I'm not necessarily wanting to kill a shark - just buy me some time to get in the boat and get him away from me.

Thanks for the reply's - I'll take any advice I can get.

No smaller than .223 for the toothy guys......you dont want to piss him off

I second the advice on the .223. They deliver a massive blast and will kick butt. The ammo is really cheap, and blank rounds can be found fairly easily as they are used by the military in the M-4 carbine. Blanks are safer and extremely powerful.
