My question is, are they really better? I think I would like to add a nice set of spring straps to my Tusa Xpert Zoom split fins. I like the ones that come on the atomic aquatics. Are they universal enough to go on my fins?

I will admit that Atomics springs look nice! But they missed half of the boat... yes its easier, no adjustment needed, yes there is no rubber to dry rot and crack... but they are supposed to remove failure points... Atomics left their buckle on the fin! So now instead of loosing a $5 rubber strap you loose $60 worth of springs...I would recomend XS scuba spring straps, or if you DIY the Tusa has a simple post so you can use a SS hook and crimp it around the post so the springs will never come off.

I added spring straps to my Tusa Xpert Zooms and it's been a major improvement. Don't mess around with the straps that require surgery on your fins (cutting the mounting posts and bolting through the rubber). It's irreversible and, if you don't do it right, it'll ruin your fins. There are spring straps that snap directly into your existing quick-release buckles. Obviously, I disagree with David P in this regard. But I've never lost a fin. To lose the straps themselves, both buckles would have to fail. This seems unlikely to me.

Take a look here. These straps snap directly into the female buckles on your TUSA X-Pert Zoom fins. We have sold HUNDREDS of these.

I just bought the spring straps for my older Atomic Splits that are for the new Atomic "Smoke on the Water" splits and dove with them for a week in Cozumel. They are by far IMHO better than regular straps. Easy on and easy off. They do have a simple adjustment at each buckle.

I would not buy an aftermarket strap that requires yoou to alter your fins or straps. They make straps that come ready to use with no hassle on your part.

Hope this helps.

Spring Straps rock. One no longer has to spend over $30 for a good set which is not much more than the cost of the original straps.

Advantages of spring straps?
  • Easy to get into/out of. Just pull the strap over the heel.
  • Depth compensating. Rubber is as well, but the springs straps are stronger.
  • No cracking, and no plastic if you go with steel buckles.
  • No adjustments necessary. Make sure you purchase the right size.
  • Strong, secure, and very little chance they may break.
Look at the EZ-Spring Straps, Blue Reef spring straps, and the Innovative Spring Straps (Dive Sports, and others). They are all so similar that I would not doubt if they are made in one factory, and then branded. I have a pair of the EZ spring straps with the neon yellow pulls. They are HIGHLY visible.

I just ordered two more pair of the all steel straps from LP. At $10 a pair, I could not pass, but they are now back ordered, and off sale.

I personally like the straps that do NOT require fin modification. If you want to sell the fins in the future, you can pull the springs, and put the original straps back on. If the spring DOES get stretched out, or twisted, they are easy to replace. No chance of messing up the fins if you are installing them after market. If you want to give the fins to a friend or family member, they may need a different size.
