Sub hunting in shallow water is also nothing new. The point was that P-3's today are involved in a lot more than hunting subs.
AFAIK, the P-3s have always been involved in a lot more than hunting subs. The change is a matter of degree.
DA Aquamaster:
In contrast during the cold war, sub hunting used to be their primary mission and older VP crews were extremely good at it, whether it was mid ocean or along a coast line.
Shallow water ASW has been a pain as long as there have been submarines. Even the guys who are extremely good at it get turned around. That applies to _all_ platforms.
DA Aquamaster:
It's a perishable skill that is no longer present to the same degree in VP squadrons that now perform multiple roles. But hey, you have a right to your own opinion.
That is true enough. My last work with P-3s was in 1981 and the difference between the guys in WESTPAC and the guys out of Moffett Field or Barbers Point was pretty impressive. I attribute that to different spots in the POM workup cycle.

The reservists out of Whidbey Island required considerable handholding to even get an exercise started. It can only be worse now.

How all of this this affects the need for LFA or LFA's effect on wildlife is unclear to me.

DA Aquamaster:
And I disagree with the need to beware of what professors tell you. In my experience, they tend to say it like it is, they just offend people because they are less likely than most people to buy into bogus authoritarian explanations and arguments or confine what they say to only those things that are currently viewed as being politically correct. And it's a good thing because if they didn't disagree with the status quo, we'd still be sitting in caves discussing the benfits of being active versus passive cat food.

And I disagree with that as I have had many professors on both sides. Those that tell it like it is as well as those who tell it like they "THINK" it is. You cannot forget those that because of their position feel their way is the only way and use their position as a podium to spread their beliefs.

You have to be aware and use your brain no matter who is telling you something.

I am working with a scientist who is using passive sonar to identify fish and their spawning habits. He also uses low energy active to create images of the actual fish he's listening too...It's really interesting...he's also been recording my dive students in the pool and can actually detect which brand of regulator they are using. He's trying to get Homeland Security $$$ to detect bad guy divers in and around ports.

I heard about an outfit looking into whether acoustics play a part in the larval recruitment of reef fishes. could it be you guys?
