QUALITATIVE STUDY OF NITROGEN NARCOSIS
AIM OF THE RESEARCH:
A considerable proportion of the knowledge of nitrogen narcosis is extremely anecdotal, scattered amongst different elements of the diving community and rarely informing the academic research in a coherent manner. In addition, most of the experimental studies on nitrogen narcosis have used dry hyperbaric chambers rather than the actual underwater environment. The aim is to collect accounts of narcosis and provide a systematic report based on the actual experience of divers themselves. There are 2 primary aims to the research: 1) These accounts can be compiled and analysed to provide data on the type of people that get narked, factors affecting narcosis, which factors are most important in potentiating narcosis, etc. 2) In addition to an analysis of the reports themselves, the accounts are intended to provide guidance and stimulation as to the most promising avenues for future experimental research. Even if you do not get narked we would be interested in a response from you.
THE QUESTIONNAIRE
Please answer the questions below honestly and as fully as possible. Email addresses are optional but are useful to the researcher in case clarification of a point is required:
1. Age:
2. Gender:
3. Email (optional):
4. Diving Qualification(s):
5. How long have you been diving?
6. How many dives have you completed? (Estimate if not known)
7. How many dives 40m or deeper have you completed? (Estimate if not known)
8. What is the deepest you have dived?
9. In the space below please give a description at least one dive (or dives if appropriate) when you think you experienced nitrogen narcosis. There is no word limit so provide as much detail as possible in terms of where you were diving (e.g. wreck/reef, country, environmental conditions, visibility, etc), how deep you were, what you actually experienced physically and mentally and any factors that you think contributed to you being narked. Full descriptions of the actual dive(s) are needed but any additional personal opinions and beliefs you have regarding your experience and the topic of nitrogen narcosis generally are also sought and will be greatly valued. If you believe you do not get narked we would also be interested in why you think this might be so.
Thank you for your participation. All information is strictly confidential and will not be viewed by anyone except the researcher and the identity of all participants will be hidden in the advent of publication.
Please email your responses to one of the addresses below. If you would like to know the results of the study or have any further questions you can contact the researcher at:
