Hi all,

Doing my due diligence and looking for places to stay and dive at the start of June. We're flying into HRG, hopping straight onto a liveaboard for a few days, then looking for somewhere to stay to round out the trip for another 5 days or so.

I've recently redone my AOW with Nitrox and hoping to focus on Wreck Diving for this trip, but I did most of my diving back in the days of paper ~2005, and lost my logbook in a fire, which means I don't have many dives I can prove, so that might make it tricky to do sites that ask for 20-50+ logged dives. I don't mind building up my record again, it's just something that might prohibit some sites on this holiday.

I am also sharing the holiday with my mother, who snorkles, but is getting a bit old, so struggles with difficult entries/rough seas etc.

If I could describe the perfect accommodation we're looking for, it'd include all of the following:

- Good snorkeling at the hotel, that you can just walk in and out of, with a house reef/jetty and a bit of life to explore - not just white sand!

- The hotel itself to be quiet (ideally no kids) and no noise or loud music. Bed by 22:00 is perfectly fine! We're not here for nightlife or drinking. The fewer people, the better. Rustic is fine, luxury is also fine.

- A decent dive outfit attached to the hotel (or can shuttle me) where I can do a PADI Specialty course or two. Ideally with some wreck options, but at a pinch I could do those in HGH after the liveaboard, and just stick to reefs outside of town. Maybe do Deep Diving or Night Diving courses or similar.

- Ideally some nice things for my mother, like massages, or a spa, or somewhere interesting/attractive nearby for her to walk/experience while I'm off diving all day.

I understand I may not find somewhere that has all of this, and some compromise will be needed, but that's our shopping list of things we're looking for.

I've already looked at Breakers and Marsa Shagra, but neither have availability for our dates. The other RSDS sites are probably too far away.

My understanding is that the shore reef snorkelling gets better the further south from HRG you go, so I've been looking down the coast - Makadi, Safaga, Quseer, Coraya, Port Ghalib. Further south than that and you'll waste almost 2 days just driving from HRG and back again, which isn't ideal.

I've been looking at places mentioned in posts on here, but have now reached about 2018, and obviously reviews become a lot less reliable when you're talking about what it was like 8+ years ago.

Does anyone have any experience or ideas for good places that might fit? Thanks in advance.

Have you had a look at the other hotels in Soma Bay: Sheraton, Kempinski, Robinson?
These will certainly offer something for your mother while still being near the dive and snorkeling spots. Or maybe the Viva Blue in Sharm el Naga. More "rustic".
Makadi Bay is quite overrated and very touristic, same for Sahl Hasheesh (only my opinion).
...
PS: it's HRG, not HGH

Thanks for the note, updated!

The Sheraton is an option, looks like you could walk to the jetty at Breakers and snorkel there, as well as snorkeling in front of the Sheraton itself. Is that the case? Or is the jetty restricted to Breaker guests only? I can also see some reviews about renovation noise at the moment, but most people seem fine with it.

The Robinson seems a little overpriced for basically the same thing as the other two, or is it significantly nicer than the competition?

The Kempinski is next to the marina and looking at google satellite maps, seems to just have a beach - can't see much coral or rocks in the water nearby.

Is there much difference between the shore snorkelling at Soma Bay vs further south like Quseer or Coraya? I'm happy to travel farther if it means better swimming, because I will happily spend 6 hours per day in the ocean, if there's interesting things to explore!

Your Google Maps investigations are correct.
The jetty is not restricted. If you dive with Orca, you will have golf cart taking you to the water and back.
I‘m Team Breakers, hence no experience with the other ones, but I know of many Sheraton guests coming to dive there.

I am another fan of Breakers. I have stayed at a few hotels along the coastline, both before and after liveaboards, and also for 1 or 2 week stays. I would say that Breaker is the best option for your requirements. If that is booked then as suggested Sheraton is a great option, if you can pick the right room it is very close to Orca Divers.

As another option Magic Life Kalawy is worth a look too. I was there a few years for a two week stay. A good dive shop, and house reef is good for snorkelling and diving. It is about an hours drive south from Hurghada.

FWIW after liveaboard diving I find that I am dived out for a bit, so tend not to bother with much (or any) diving if I am staying on for a few days. I just use the time to relax and have a few beers.
