I'll be diving at Pelham for the first time this weekend. Anyone one have any current conditions/what to expect? Any tips for someone that hasn't been there before, etc...

Thanks for the help!

Hi!

I'll be there Sat as well (not diving, though...a friend is going to show me how to manifold my cylinders together). Feel free to stop by and say "Hi"...look for the short redhead driving a grey Miata.

ABWA is pretty temperate until you hit the thermocline...the first one is at 35 ft or so. Brrrr...I won't dive below 40 ft wet if I can help it :D However, lots of other people (who aren't wimps like me) dive wet below the thermocline. My computer recorded a bottom temp of 60 degrees on my last dive (to 110 ft)

There's two sets of docks...the main docks (directly below the dive shop) and a second dock (down the hill to the right of the dive shop). Off the main dock, there's a 4 ft platform, an 8 ft platform, and a 15 ft platform. To the left of the 15 ft platform, you'll find a descent line...that leads to the sailboat, the schoolbus (at about 70 ft) and a weird concrete box (about 80 feet). You can either follow the line back, or follow the quarry wall to some concrete tubes that you can swim through, and then continue to follow the wall back to the platforms.

If you dive off the far docks (the one to the right of the dive shop and bathrooms), there's a 15 foot platform, I think. From the platform, (if the vis isn't trashed) you'll be able to see some of the underwater wreckage sunk for your amusement. There's a couple of firetrucks, a camper, a few boats and a car sunk around that area. The average depth is 30-40 ft. Most of the wreckage is between the two docks, so if you start at one dock and swim to the other, you'll run into most of the underwater wreckage (if memory serves).

The dive shop at ABWA has EAN fills, can rent cylinders (LP77, I think), and the majority of any other gear you might need.

They have copies of a map in the dive shop that can probably do a better job of explaining where everything is than I'm able to :)

Check out their website www.divealabama.com for more info...the owners, Wayne and Stephen, are more than happy to answer any questions you might have.

Well I was suppose to be going this Weekend but the buddy got free tickets to the Georgia game so he is going there. If anyone needs a buddy let me know.

Everything BamaMedic said is dead on. I would add also that folks start lining up outside the gate very early so if you want a good parking spot its best to get there a good bit before 0900. I also think tomorrow the DiveRite folks will be there so it may be more crowded than usual. I'm going out there after lunch so I'll ask Stephen.

Kevua and I are meeting up in the morning so if anybody else needs somebody to dive with, feel free to join us. Look for a grey GMC Sierra with a black tool box.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like there'll be plenty to see and do. I look forward to meeting some of you guys tomorrow.

I'll be there with a couple other guys and plan on showing up late morning/early afternoon. I'll be driving a silver blazer if you want to stop over and say hi, otherwise i'll try to find some of you while i'm there.
