Hi all,
I am traveling to Ft.Lauderdale,Miami area in 2 weeks with my family. Can someone recommend a place where I can do some shore diving/snorkeling while my family can hang around on the shore?

I don't mind drive to key largo. But only looking for shore dive. Thanks.

BTW, what do you guys do with a conch? eat them?

Lauderdale by the Sea, that is at the east end of Commercial Blvd. There is a dive shop close by and you can enter the ocean just south of the pier.

Conchs are made into chowder.

Good Luck!

Please don't take any conch, it is against the law! But we do eat them in restaurants!

Lots of info on shore diving here.

Here is a link to numerous shore diving sites in FL. It has user reviews and information regarding Lauderdale by the Sea and the other sites listed. However, I cannot vouch for any of the info because I haven't tried out all the sites...yet!

Daytura Ave, Hibiscus Ave, Johnson street, Dania Beach are all great shore dives all are great beaches with life guards. Be sure to post a new thread with the date and location of your shore dive .... and other divers will show up to dive with you ;)

Hey Cast,
LBTS is a great shore dive but parking unless you get a hotel on the water or beat the locals early is a hard go as then you may have to drag your kit, they do have rinse showers at several public access spots that are nice to rinse you and your gear one draw back is that on lots of days the winds will make it hard to get out to dive or unsafe to try.
Not sure on your skill level but man you need to do a boat dive for sure as the boat can get out most days and with the many GREAT Florida opps in the area you will be in you need to do a reef dive not knocking LBTS but the best reef is to far to swim
I am sure you can find a dive boat shop that will get you on a dive in your skill level-and even get you a DM to buddy with you if unsure how a SE Florida drift dive works and the cost is not bad for a two tank dive, some Great diving can be had!
Oh by the way Conch is more a Bahamian thing they get them and prep them one of two ways one as a cold salad with lime juice and other veggie items as a cold salad great, the other way is the pound the heck out of it and batter it and deep fry them and make conch fritters as several places up north a bit in Boynton beach make it as good as on West End Grand Bahama !!
Just got back from a week of diving from Boynton to the Keys and have hours of video and pictures still to burn on DVD, have fun and do try a boat dive if you can.
Dive safe,
Brad

Brad, you are assuming that Cast is a new and inexperienced diver, and we don't actually know that...his or her profile is blank.

But, Cast, if you are not an experienced diver, do not do a beach dive unless you can convince a few experienced people to go with you. Who is going to save you if something goes wrong? It is nice having that boat support right there if you are new.

Let's just say that I've had to tow a few inexperienced beach divers back from the reef and it wasn't any fun for either of us.

But, even if you are experienced, why don't you want to do boat dives? We have some awesome opps down here and you will see wonderful things. I'd hate to come all the way to a new place and miss the best diving because I didn't want to spend $60!

Doesn't anyone read what the gentleman wrote? To me, it is obvious he wants to be with his family during this trip...
