I hear a lot of people her use the A series from canon, but I do not hear much about the SD series (ELPH) cameras. Is there a reason for this as it appears the SD series are generally more expensive??

In a nutshell, the A series used to have all manual controls and the SD series did not. Manual controls are really important for underwater shooting as there are many situations where the camera just can't give you what you really want in an auto mode underwater.

Some of the newer A series do not have full manual controls. One of the SD range now has some manual control, but not full yet.

The SDs are usually more expensive because of their form factor.

I just picked up two more A720s and Canon housings. Just can't go wrong, imho.

Many A series cameras have manual plus auto, program, Av aperture priority and Tv shutter priority. N

As a P/S camera user, another big factor is battery.. A series is using a regular/rechargeable battery, but SD has to use their own battery as I know

The SD series can take advantage of more manual settings by using the CDHK software. I have the SD850IS and have CDHK loaded onto it. I use the software to shoot in RAW format (not available in normal camera software) and usually adjust the shutter speed as well (also not available in the normal camera software).

I already owned the 850 and wanted to add functionality. I am planning on buying a new camera and am considering models that allow more manual control. If you are buying a camera that will see time underwater, I highly recommend a camera that has manual funcitonality built in (therefore not the SD's)

Many of the A Series also have the cdhk hack available. N

A long time ago, in a land far away, digital cameras were expensive, and the A series and S series cameras all had manual control for the most part. My S70 for example allows full control, and RAW. Times have changed.

Now it is model by model, so if you want a specific set of features, look closely at each model as one can no longer make blanket statements about A/SD/G series cameras.

A bigger factor is if the camera has an UW housing available. I would not purchase a camera, and assume an UW housing in on the way, unless the manufacture has made such a statement.
