I have hair about to my mid-back. I haven't been diving very long, but I can't do anything with it and it's always in my way. I am also very tender headed, so I can't comb out big tangles. So what do I do. I don't want to cut it, but... I'm kinda lost on this one.

How about Braiding it?

My hair is mid-back length too but my head in tough. I can comb out tangles with no tears.

I do put it in 2 ponytails (pig tails but our hair is longer) then use clippies for the bangs. Not a perfect solution but better than nothing. Braids have not worked for me as most of it falls out when wet. Try using extra conditioner before diving.

Sorry I could not be more helpful.
