I'm sorry to ask this question again but I have been looking at past threads for about a week and have gotten nowhere.

It's time for me to start thinking of buying my first regulator. But I don't know what I should look at. I am looking for a good reg that will last a long time but not looking to spend a ton $400 is about the max I can afford right now.

I don't know if I need to worry about getting a "cold water" reg. The water here in Massachusetts gets cold, but is it cold enough to effect the regulator?

I got no help from the dive shop. All they told me was get the Mk25/s600. And when I asked them what the difference was between the others they just kept saying you want the Mk25/s600.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You want the Mk25/s600

Just kidding I don't know all that much about the different types of regs but I just had to say it

Wat are the actual water temps? I dive in Michigan where I've been in the low 40s with my MK17/G250V and haven't had any issues. But if you post a temp those more educated would be able to tell you more about regs for your diving needs.

MK17/MK25 with S600/S650/S700 are good choices

You might want to consider the long term costs wrt parts and maintence and were the work will be done. If going through a LDS check to see what they carry.

Mid 40's is pretty darn cold. You might want to look at cold water regulators. The Scubapro MK17/G250 is an environmentally sealed 1st stage and is said to be quite good.
Another option is the Oceanic FDX10/Delta4. It is also an environmentally sealed 1st stage and is available currently at a great price from Leisure Pro.
Another option would be the Sherwood Blizzard. It is a piston 1st stage which usually are not good for cold water, but it has a dry chamber for the piston so seawater does not get into the 1st stage. It also has modifications to the 2nd stage that somehow make it better for cold water.

Zeagle, Apeks and AquaLung also make excellent cold water regs that can probably be had for about that price.
I do not trust a shop that will push one reg when there are so many good regs available.
