My wife's Olympus housing is leaking - PT-EP06. Looks like the front of the lens port. There are Phillips head screws holding the glass plate to the port. Is it safe for me to take it apart, clean, and reassemble? We're in Mexico and I would like to fix the housing if I can.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

Here's a link to the manual. Other than o ring replacement, theres nothing in it about user based service. That being said, if its not usable at the moment, what have you got to loose other than the vacation pictures this trip. If you fix it, great, if you don't it's got to go the shop when you get home anyway.

Stuff the housing full of paper towels and submerge- that will show you where the leak is.

Thanks. I read the manual and it says nothing about taking the port apart. I took the empty housing diving and the leak is definitely coming from the front of the lens port.

Taking Steve's good advice, I took the lens port apart by removing the screws from the face plate which then lifts off. Under that is the glass face which is held in place and water sealed by an o-ring. Pressing the glass from the inside of the port pops it off. I cleaned the o-ring and all surfaces. To put it back together, grease the o-ring, put the o-ring into the port opening and then press the glass port into place. The face plate has a two little pegs that fit into holes and then the screws can be tightened. I'll test the housing tomorrow and see if it still leaks.

It worked! I took the housing on a dive and it's dry.

You probably had a little bit of salt intrusion somewhere along the "O"ring. Over time it dried, expanded, infiltrated with more salt water which dried and expanded further.

Soaking housings rather than just rinsing them can help prevent this.
