That is a great idea. Bait car kind of thing?

I think sting operations with covert surveillance at some of the northern dive sites would likely be the most efficient, cost-effective way of dropping petty theft of property from vehicles. That, and very long, harsh sentencing upon conviction.

The northern sites like Oil Slick need most secluded, with the lowest distance visibility, unlike some of the southern dive sites.

Richard.

No, make it safer. It might seem draconian in the beginning but with more success against crime the police would have less patrolling to do

So you want them to divert their tax revenue to make the island a Police State? Yeah, that sounds like a great idea.

What they are doing, but mostly NOT doing, is not working so something should change.

How much time and how many officers are currently used on patrols? Do you have something tangible to indicate that they arent doing so already?
Maybe the insurance companies could elect to provide a paid security guard in place of theft coverage with every car rental. Since Bonaire is not a wealthy country and crime is so rampant there, surely this would be a more cost effective solution than constantly paying claims on stolen items. Hotels could do the same thing.

yes, I hear that's true. Did not know about the Bahamnas?:dontknow:

The crime on Bonaire is a lot less than Jamaica, Virgin Islands or the Bahamas. Everywhere in the world has crime. There is no crime free diver paradise including the local quarry.

The petty crime that does occur doesn't keep people from going back to the island time and time again. Not everybody that goes gets robbed or swindled. In fact, based on the replies to your posts a majority of people DON'T get robbed.

Places with serious crimes (muggings, beatings, kidnappings) employ private security at resorts and have a big paramilitary police force. My trips to Jamaica and Dominican Rebuplic come to mind. I believe any other Caribbean Island without the serious crimes will have the same level of petty crime. These are poor, generally third world countries. I feel much safer in Bonaire than I do in NYC or Philly.

Those otherr islands you mentioned are not dive destinations so it is not my/our concern, necessarily.

The crime on Bonaire has gone from petty to serious/dangerous -i.e., room break-ins condo break-ins. While it is true that the majority of people do not get robbed on Bonaire, the same thing could be said about the other crime ridden islands you mentioned. Whether you are part of the 10%, 20% or 30% that gets robbed makes no difference. It is unacceptable for those that are victims. The point is, crime not taken care of gets worse. It's not even addressed properly on Bonaire.

^10^10

Jamaica is not a dive destination? DR is not a dive destination? A dive destination is anywhere that someone travels to to do some diving. Mike also referenced every other Caribbean island....they are not dive destinations?????

You only say this because you have such a hate on for Bonaire.

.

Since you don't go or intend to go to Bonaire, it shouldn't be your concern. Can't you find something to bitch and whine about closer to home? Maybe global warming or healthcare reform? What exactly did you have stolen the one time you went to Bonaire that has caused your psychotic obsession?

He has experienced exactly ZERO criminal activity on Bonaire.

Funny - both of my trips to Jamaica and Dominican Republic were fairly heavy on the dive side. Great trips in general, but with the armed guards at the edge of the resorts, I just wasn't comfortable on the islands.
