Hello all Forum members from Rodney & Penny aboard the yacht in Botany Bay - Sydney - Australia.

I have attached some photos below so you can see just who we are - and where we live. And although little Penny thedogpaddler - is keen to go on all adventures - and never wants to miss an outing - she's a 'one time a day' swimmer - and 'an all day long' sunbaker.

I have done a wealth of diving in years gone by - and with my previous yacht cruised and dived all through the Solomons and Truk and Micronesia - they were wonderful experiences.

And while I was diving fairly regularly around our own coastline here - during the time I was building this yacht - I have not been under for about 2 years. This despite the fact that I have several sets of gear aboard and about 6 bottles.

Also - completely out of the blue - (as these things tend to be) I had an unexpected heart problem - 1 week after the yacht came out into the bay for the first time this year - following 15 years of construction.

Thus it came to be - that I was looking on the net today - just to see what advice others had about scuba diving with cardiomyopathy (heart disease) - as I'm all set to dive in the next few days to re-do the mooring we're on - with new heavy chains and ground tackle - to handle our 75' and 75 tons.

I've rung the heart specialist - and expect to hear back tomorrow - but I will be surprised if I'm unable to make the 5m shallow 'work' dive required.

Anyway - it happened that one of the links was this Forum - and it amazes me that I have not browsed straight in to you before - spending so much time on the net - with a big website and belonging to another big Forum - the Cruisers Forum - (for boaties naturally) - so I found some helpful information here - but as always some say yes, and some say no.

I registered to join you immediately - and I will be having a good look around - and taking advantage of the wealth of information here.

I hope you get to know us - well - as time goes on - because I love to post lot's of photos of all we get up to aboard the yacht - and you are welcome to visit our site thedogpaddler.com - and please go through to the > New > Email Newsletters to see all about us - right up to the last few days - and the big drama we had over the weekend with a giant barge dragging down on to us.

It seems I can't post URL photos straight in to this thread (until I've done 5 posts) and so I've 'attached' some shots below for you. (the last one of me diving alongside the giant gun was taken in Truk Lagoon about 20 years ago - and is still a favourite - and what marvellous visibility eh?)

Bye for now - and I will be looking to track down some dive buddies for some 'off the yacht' diving here in Botany Bay - so if you are local to me - and diving around here - please drop me a line.

regards

Rodney & Penny

Welcome to the board.

NOT A DOCTOR. IMHO: Bummer about the heart thing. Heart attack has been reported as the most common cause of diver fatalities. The stress of hauling gear, and suiting up is what causes most of the problems. Don't want to have an attack in the water as CPR is quite impossible until they get you back on the boat, which could take a while. So find a good heart doctor that knows dive medicine and follow his advice. Divers Alert Network (DAN) is always a good reference for your doctor to contact.

Good luck to you.

A warm welcome to the board. Thanks for the photos, that's a very cute dog!

welcome aboard
