The harder part to believe is that they would think to carry such a
device around with them 24 by 7 just in case you need to hide underwater

like, hello....?

the're Jedi! they can meditate and use the force and stuff and know what they
need ahead of time (sort of like Q in 007)

which.... raises an interesting point.... if they're Jedi force-bending masters,
why do they even need these devices? can't they just meditate and forego
the need for oxygen for a bit?

I've seen in some movies and shows (Star Wars, Pokemon) these things that the people put in their mouth and they could breathe underwater while using them. I'm thinking that they work by filtering the oxygen from the water to you. If these exist, where can I get one?
Hey there chicnstu,
Welcome to SB, looks like you found the right place for all the right answers. ;)
Hey where'd he go? Where'd who go? :crafty:

I don't know why everyone is not taking you seriously. As you said, if it's in the movies (Stars Wars, Pokemon), then it must be true. Personally, I feel anything you see in those movies is pure bunk. The only real movie and real gadgets are those shown on STAR TREK.

To answer your question then, in Star Trek (unlike Star Wars), they do not use primitive devices no matter how small that you put in your mouth. Instead, a force field encapsulates the "diver" and you are simply beamed down to the proper location under water. The field automatically gives you surface air and pressure of one atmosphere. Much more civilized than those primitives in Star Wars. As for where you can get one, well, simply open up your communicator and ask Lt. Commander Montgomery Scott to beam you up. You'll experience a momentary out of body experience but you should be able to re-materialize in the transporter room.... :lol2:

Welcome to the board chicnstu. If you really justed wanted to know if there are more ADVANCED underwater breathing equipment and had cited what you saw on Star Wars and Pokemon as an EXAMPLE (please don't tell me you honestly believe that anything you see in those movies ARE real?), then you would have gotten a lot more serious response. The most advanced breathing apparatus is a re-breather similar to what NASA uses for space walks (I know ... are they real....). No one has come up with a James Bond sized thingamajig that filters out the proper breathing gas (air or oxygen or whatever). However, research continues (liquid air/oxygen ... ala the Abyss) but I doubt if anything will replace those tanks just yet....

There is a device that will produce oxygen without tanks. Don't think it would be practical for underwater use but where I work we have literally hundreds of the units

Very cool! Thanks for the link. I love obscure diving history trivia. My dive buddy is amazed and annoyed with all the strange diving facts, figures and information I accumulate during surface intervals (a.k.a the time I should be working).

But then I figured it out. It simply teleports air from above the serface down to the muthpiece and then teleports the exuasted air back. Basically it is a high tech snorkel This way the device would work in a fire too or for poision gass or whatever.

Didn't they hold their breath when in a room with poison gas? Maby it wasn't a teleporter, Or maby they forgot it, or not carry it 24/7? I'm sure the guys with the camera had something to do with it.

Yes, this was a serious question. I was just hoping that someone had invented something sort of like what I talked about.

No idea if it's true or not, just announced recently.

That guy stole my idea! Let's see, I posted it here on 5/26... pretty good for only six days! He even figured out how to bypass the dialysis catheter problem, and the equalization issue..

There are many ideas being tested now, but so far the SCUBA, hookah, and rebreather setups are as good as it gets. Welcome to the board, and don't take any of us seriously as all is in good fun.
That being said, everyone has missed the most obvious "no gear" method of underwater respiration.
Prior to diving underwater, the person must simply speak three words,...
Klaatu Veratta Nik(cough)tu!
There. Wasn't that easy?
No bulky gear, no hassles, just,...
WHAT? I said the words! Well, maybe not all of them, but mostly, pretty much!
Yeah!
