Well, this is about my 20th post but I'm finally getting around to saying hello. Hello.
I live in the Chicago area in the suburb of Carol Stream. I don't quite have my OW cert. yet but am close. I have completed all of the pool requirements and passed the written tests. Our OW dives are scheduled for the first weekend in June and will be in a local quarry. I'm a single guy, 35, and pretty much have no life. I'm hoping that diving will change that somewhat. (either or both would be fine with me) I'm looking into a local diving club and went to a meeting earlier this week. It was a great experience and I hope to become a member after I get certified. I was a bit surprised at the number of women that were there (pleasantly). The opportunity to meet that special someone who shares diving as an interest will be much easier than meeting a female ham operator. Our club for amateur radio was in desperate need of estrogen. ;) Be that as it may, I participate in Skywarn (storm spotting) and am a member of the Amateur Radio Emergency Services(ARES) which is a volunteer group that helps out during disasters. You may have heard about the Utica, IL tornado that leveled the town a couple of weeks ago. Our group was spotting when it hit and because of our reports the sirens were sounded in time. Unfortunatly 4 people in the town still died but the toll would have been terrible had our spotters not been out there. Well, that's starting to get a bit depressing so I'll leave it at that..

I tried to get a photo up but for some reason my camera keeps crashing my computer. I'm a tech for IBM and will eventually figure it out but in the mean time no pics. You all should be grateful for the technical problem anyway. ;)

As I said, I have been posting for a while now and really like this board. Lots of good information and everyone seems so civil. NOTHING like the rec.scuba news group which is worthless unless you want to insult someone or be insulted. I'm glad I found this place and look forward to many posts and replies.

Welcome to the board!
Good luck with you open water dives.

Enjoy your time here and welcome to diving.

Yes, the gender ratio is much better in diving than in Ham radio. I am N6CHV so I have some experience with this. :D

Good job on Skywarn, most people (who have never seen a tornado) have no idea how important that extra few minutes of warning is.

Welcome to SB!!
:happywave Put us in your computer's favorites and check in often. This is a great place to learn, compare, argue :argue:

Now I don't feel totally dumb about not knowing how to operate my puter. :jester: Nice Avatar!

Hello Joe,

Welcome! Good Luck with OW dives.

I think you will find this a very enjoyable sport! I've met some very wonderful people since I began diving, folks I probably would not have met otherwise. I travel more now than ever before! The UW world is one place you get can away from it all, and just Relax! IMO :)

Thanks everyone for the well wishes on the OW dive and the welcome. Great to be here and no need to mark this in my favorites. I don't think I've closed the window since I joined ;)
