Yes, I think your first press raises the mirror and second opens the shutter. If you hold the shutter button the shutter stays open. Apparently, some people have had problems with long exposures using a remote.
 
i got a remote from ebay larry, it was 4 euros,, very cheap,very happy with it indeed, ill get a decent tripod next, i just have a dodgey diy one at the moment but its steady and does the job, ill post a picture or 2 when i get around to getting out and taking some, if it ever stops raining here hahah
