I am heading to Egypt in mid October, I have 6 days. I plan to visit the Pyramids the first morning, then fly to Sharm or Hurghada that night. I want to start diving the next morning and following 4 days. The last day will be an off-gas day, and probably relaxing on the beach. My goal is photography and possibly some wrecks. Any suggestions? Sharm and Hurghada seem like a quick flight from Cairo. Which would be better for photography? Which one would have wreck dives? Any suggestions for a dive shop/ company?

I don't have any answers but I have a lot of the same questions (hope it's ok I hyjack your thread for my own use). We are planning a 10 day trip Nov/Dec. Looking for 5 days of diving followed by the normal Egypt tourism things (pyramids, trip down the Nile, etc...). I was planning on visiting the pyramids at the end of the trip so we don't have to waste a day off-gassing...we can site see during that time and then a couple more days. Can we get from Sharm to the other sites without flying? Also looking to advice on diving? Is Sharm the place to go or should we consider somewhere else? We are interested in all diving but more in the big stuff and things we can't see in our normal trips to the Caribbean. We probably won't be back for a long time so it will be a busy trip (we can sleep when we get home). No need to save anything for next time. So, if there is anything we shouldn't miss, I'd love to hear about it.

If you like wrecks there are some great one's around Sharm, a couple off Tiran Island which is just off the coast at the north of Sharm. There's also the Thistlegorm, probably the most famous wreck in Egypt for diving. Look into going on a livaboard for a few days, some are geared more towards wreck diving. There's also Ras Mohammed marine park which has some fabulous dives.

I've been to Sharm about six times and love it, if I'm not diving I can easily spend hours snorkelling...ending up with a very strange looking tan though.

I'd also look at Marsa Alam which is a lot less touristy. I've stayed at a couple of hotels there but my favourite place is Red Sea Diving Safari where you can book an unlimited dive package for the house reefs...great value plus you are not tied to a schedule, they also do truck trips to other dive site along the coast, or you can can get the rib to drop you further along the reef. Also Elphinstone reef is only a rib ride away.

Have a look at Oonas Divers for Sharm and Marsa. I've dived with Sinai Divers and the dive centre at the Sheraton, both were excellent. You could check out the Yorkshire Divers forum's trip reports for Sharm as many of them go to Egypt both land based and on livaboards.

Oh yes, saw my first hammerhead off Tiran Island and my first oceanic white tip off Elphinstone..woohoo!

wrecks and some nice reef for photography then it can be sharm or hurghada but sharm is more recommended. Famous wrecks of abu nahas and the thistlegorm would need a LA or a mini safari trip (3 days/2 nights) from hurghada or even 2days/1night if you depart from sharm,

Big stuff means getting more south to marsa alam... but again the best diving is always on liveaboard trips that go to remote islands (brothers/daedalus/elphinstone) ... elphinstone can be reached though by daily boats from marsa alam

heading from sharm to Cairo by bus is a 6 hours trip, I personally would relax on the beach then get my flight to Cairo.

look into the redsea forum and you will find lots of info. Also our SB mate samaka has a wonderful website full of useful info about redsea (hurghada and south) WELCOME TO AZIAB
let me know if you have more specific questions.
