Just want to know if anyone is using this set up and if so what settings are you using in the 570. Does pre flash operate in the Av, Tv and Manual modes. Should I just stick with auto and adjust the output of the flash via the ds51 manual controller.

Leaving next week for Roatan. Hopefully I get this right. I guess practice makes perfect.

I am, but my strobe is an Inon D2000. That is the best setting I can recommend in addition to an Inon wide angle or ultra wide angle or fisheye lens or macro lens.

I suggest you read your camera and strobe operator manuals. Your questions are addressed there.

In camera manual the preflash is canceled. Also if you go to manual strobe in the camera menu the pre flash is canceled. You may also address the pre flash in the menu.

I usually shoot with my camera in Av, Inon D2000 in auto. Set the camera strobe to manual in the menu and then set the power level to 1/3 (this will also cancel preflash). Cancel all of the pre focus and evaluative and focus assist settings. As to f stops and shutter etc, there is no magic answer, whatever the meter reads and my brain chooses depending upon the effect I desire in my photograph is the correct exposure setting.

With the camera in "auto Av" the strobe will not fire when the camera meter thinks it does not need strobe, that is great. If you need it to fire in such conditions for creative fill then you will have to select camera strobe to "Forced" and of course if you don't want strobe you can select flash "Off" as well.

I see that the DS-51 is just a manual strobe with no Auto modes. I am spoiled by letting the Inon D2000 in Automatic decide the strobes exposure simply by putting in my f stop and then using the plus or minus knob to increase or decrease exposure.

With the DS-51 it looks like you might need to revert to full manual control of the 570IS setting both f stop and shutter speed to provide the desired results. That is a shame.
