On July 4th, 1776, a small band of men risked everything to take a principled stand against their economic and political master, England, then the mightiest power in the world. Against an uncertain outcome, they threw off the yoke of King George III and said, we mutually pledge our Lives, our Fortunes and our Sacred Honor - in support of a simple but radical idea:
Today, we celebrate their rebellion and the nation that resulted with fireworks, hot dogs and beer. We should also pause to ask ourselves if we remain true to that idea and if we would be willing to risk the same sacrifice in order that our government should remain, in the words of Abraham Lincoln, of the People, by the People and for the People.
