I'm trying to decide between the Tokina 10-17mm and the Canon 14mm fisheye lens. I noticed the Tokina lens requires the #5509.28 special zoom & clamp set.

I'd like to know if the zoom and clamp set is worth the trouble. If not, I'll spend the extra hundred and fifty bucks and buy the Canon lens.

Thx,
Chris

One more question, does every lens require a clamp set? For example, does a 60mm lens use the Standard clamp set? How about the 17-85mm lens?

I have just bought the Tokina 10-17 lens and a new 5509.28 sleeve and clamp (I already had one for my Sigma 17-70 lens HSM - it doesn't fit, but that's another story involving 4 matchsticks to fix it). On the 10-17 lens I find that the zoom sleeve seems a bit wobbly even after sticking the two thicker foam strips to the inside of the clamp - after a couple of twirls of the housing's drive gear, the sleeve shifts out of alignment and the teeth no longer mesh. I noticed that the front edge of the sleeve distorts slightly while in use. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks, Alistair

I assume you are testing with a port installed. The zoom sleeve and clamp will not work properly without a port in place.

Do you have the strips placed uniformly on the inside of the clamp? Occasionally it can be a problem if you have the strips un-evenly spaced around the clamp. Also do you have the clamp positioned at the middle of the zoom ring with the projections facing down towards the camera body?

Hi Jean, you were spot on - I had everything set up as you suggested, but I was doing my dry run testing without the dome and port body in place. It's ingenious really, the camera end of the port body holds the sleeve neatly in place. Just perfect. Thanks so much for your help.

Alistair
