Im trying to set my camera up to shoot the northern lights tonight. I can't find the book. How do I shut the flash off and wht do I need to do to the settings to make this work? Im so confused! Thanks in advance.

There should be a button on the left side of the camera where you can hold it down to change the strobe mode. Set it to the one with the cross through the lightning bolt, that will suppress the strobe.

Put the camera in shutter or manual mode. I know the 5050 can go to a 16s exposure, not sure what the maximum on the 5060 is. For something like that, plan on a few shots where you try exposures from 1 to 16s, and see which ones come out, check the result between shots. I'd start at the long end at then make the shutter speeds faster. If you use manual, you could play with the aperture at the same time. I used F8 on the attached shot, it may or may not have been the best, I only took one try on that one.

Attach a tripod, or set the camera on a flat surface to take your shot. For the exposure lengths required, you won't be able to hold it stationary (that's pretty much true for anything less than 1/20).

Given the time, I hope you can get something tomorrow.
