Greetings,

Being new to this sport, I could use some suggestions. I have a week in August and I want to do some warm water diving. I'm up here in the PNWest (Portland) and can be in Baja in three hours.

I keep hearing both good and bad things about diving in Baja.

Wondering if any of you might be able to suggest:
1) a good location in Baja
2) a good operator for either day trips or liveaboard trips

Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated! Thanks
Phil

A couple of the magazines have had articles on the Sea of Cortez in the last couple of months. I guess if you figure you can be in baja in 3 hours , the first question is where are you gonna land ? That might make the answer easier. I suspect Alaska to Los Cabos. So the southern end of Baja. Three distincly different choices. La Paz is a Mexican city that can live without the tourist. Cabo San Lucas is the other extreme. Expensive and overbearing. The middle ground is the East Cape area. Los Cabos is expensive restaurants and late night "events". After Los Cabos you need a vacation. La Paz is much more economical and quiet. The East Cape is generally all inclusive fishing resorts in the summer. Water in the sea will be in the hi 80's / low 90's in August. The ocean cooler. Bigger boats, more commercial in Las Cabos. If you can fly into La Paz , dive there. Fly into Loreto, dive there. Fly into Los Cabos $$$ I hate Los Cabos. All of it is hot and humid in August. Watch out for storms.
O yea, I'd go to La Paz, with family, East Cape. With secretary
to Cabo San Lucas.

DonO,
Thanks for the reply.... ok... so you have helped me decide that Cabo is out and La Paz is in.... can you suggest any dive operators in La Paz, that might do a decent job?

I lived down there pre diving, so all I could give you is an un-supported opinion. Check the April - Scuba Diving and the May Skin Diver for some articles.

Check Club Cantamar/Baja Diving and Service. Read my info about them on this msg board listed under mexico. I was withthem last yr and will be back shotly. Excellent all round. La Paz is also a great town the deserves it's name,"the peace". At CC/BD&S ask for Fernando. Tell him steven from toronto sent you. They've got a well informative website too.

oops, sorry, last msg was n't for donooo, it was for phil
