You have 5-6 days off. You can't leave the US (puerto rico, USVI, etc are ok). Where do you go for the best dive trip given these limits? Also, I'm considering value, i.e. quality of diving vs cost. Tanks for suggestions.

Depends on if the person in question is cave certified or not...

Well, given that I'm on the west coast, if I can't leave the US I'd probably come down around your area ... maybe book a charter out to the Channel Islands.

If it's warm water I was looking for, within those same limitations probably the USVI would be the ticket.

Really depends on the kind of diving you want to do on 'vacation'. I personally distinguish between having time off to do some diving, and taking a dive vacation.

Agree. If I was looking for warm water, with the best probablity of consistently good conditions, and a relaxed, 'laid back' pace, I would go as far south in the Caribbean as my 'US only' stipulation allowed. But, if I wanted a vacation to do some more challenging dives and wasn't as interested in relaxation, the Great Lakes would be my choice.

I have been dreaming about a B&B combined with wreck diving road trip through the Great Lakes region for a while now. I'll have to chase that one of these summers......

Key Largo is easy to get to (fly into FLL or MIA and rent a car), you can spend anywhere from a little or a lot on a room, there are some great wrecks and lots of charters, and the water is warm.

From LA? No question it would be Maui, or Kona if you haven't dived from Maui yet. I've done both numerous times and a 5-6 day trip works very well. You can fly direct to Maui in the morning. Keeping costs down, you could look for a condo on Craig's List (craigslist.com) and then to keep expenses waaaay down you could do some of the best shore diving this side of Bonaire. If you would like "escorted" shore diving the first day or so, check out Doug at ShakaDivers.com. Air fare to Maui can be had cheaply, condos via craigslist are pretty inexpensive, and shore diving is, well, shore diving.

Good luck, and if you need some recommendations for restaurants or dive ops on either Maui or Kona, PM me.
