40lbs wing and steel doubles?

Hi Guys,

I'm currently diving my double al80s with a 40lb. Halcyon Explorer wing. It's a great wing and I like it a lot. Halcyon says the wing is suitable for use with al80s or double "more bouyant" steel tanks like the Faber 95s (from EE website).

I'm about to get in the market for a set of PST E-7 100s (as the next wave of these tanks come out next month) I was planning on purchasing either a DR rec wing or a 55lb halcyon explore wing - but now I was wondering if I could use the 40lbs wing I have? Does anyone do this? I only dive dry, so I'm really not too worried about not being able to float on the surface, but I would like a wing to atleast keep my face out of the water at the begining of the dive with full tanks?

Any thoughts on this? Is the 40lb way too small.

Couple quick thoughts;

Can this wing inflate fully when the tanks your plan to use are mounted?

If so are the doubles more than 10 lbs more negative than your typical single rig?

Lets say your using a 27-30 single wing, (an assumption on my part) If the doubles aren't more than ~10 more neg, and the 40lb wing can inflate fully you should be fine.

It's not a bad idea to know just how much lead it takes to sink just you in your DS. This is the theorectical max bouyancy you can loose if your suit floods.

If this value is close to the lift max lift of the wing, you might have to ditch weight if your suit flooded, or use your bag.

Also, consider any other negatively boyant equipment that you might be bringing down with you. This, obviously, would cause you to be heavier and therefore need more lift if your BC now could not support it. Just my thought.

For what its worth I have used a 40lb wing and 55lb wing with E7-100's and the 40lb wing was plenty enough in my opinion. Keep in mind i was diving a drysuit without stages or deco bottles so that may also make a difference in your decision.

Thanks for the feedback guys, the E7 100s are about -18lbs (-8.8 each) when FULL.

When I dove double pST double 100s before I was not wearing any lead in SW (w/ a SS plate).


I don't carry much other gear except the weight of my manifold and regs. I have a can ligth (sartek) but it's very light.


Tobin, I'm diving the wing with double 80s right now and it inflates well (not impinged by anything). I wear an 8lbs V-weight with the 80s.

Nope i was using a OMS 40lb and OMS 55lb doubles wing and when compared to the explorer wings were almost identical in size. I dont see a problem if you are diving a trilam or crushed/compressed drysuit as you are just offsetting the weight of the gas(15lbs) at the begining of the dive. If diving thick neoprene you have to offset the compression of the suit also.

Just like wearing a 8lb v-weight with the aluminum 80's the v-weight will be replaced by the negative buoyancy of the E7-100's compared to the positive buoyancy characteristics of aluminum 80's near empty and a few extra lbs of gas.
