For our May meeting, we'll be joined over Zoom by Ocearch, a global non-profit conducting unprecedented research on the giants of the ocean. Their research vessel, the M/V Ocearch, is equipped with a hydraulic platform with a 75,000 lb capacity designed to safely lift marine animals out of the ocean, at which time hoses of water are set to enable a continuous flow of seawater over the gills. Once the animal is carefully restrained, the science team, made up of researchers and veterinarians, begins its process of tagging, recording statistics, and collecting samples such as blood and tissues, all in 15 minutes, before the creature is safely returned to the ocean. Some of you may remember them from the TV series Shark Wranglers.

Ocearch has tagged 92 white sharks in the North Atlantic and provides data for over 400 animals around the world. We will hear about their expeditions, the resulting research, and how the data is used for conservation, resource management, and education.

Great post . Wonder if anyone has information about the white shark population above Point Conception
California ? Local diving with big whites sounds pretty wild !
