As we slide into the holidays, our thoughts turn to Home(r). Homer Hickam, that is. Our November speaker has led a profoundly interesting life. In his youth he won medals at the National Science Fair. That story was the basis for his autobiographical Rocket Boys, which became the Hollywood blockbuster October Sky, where his character was played by Jake Gyllenhaal. After college, he served in Vietnam. Upon returning, his path led him to start SCUBA diving in the early 70's, teaching diving as an instructor, publishing articles in Skin Diver and Sport Diver magazines, exploring the waters around the sleepy outpost of Guanaja, Honduras, and discovering WWII wrecks off North Carolina (which led to his best-selling military history book Torpedo Junction). His early interest in rocketry helped him find his way to becoming a NASA engineer where he also worked as an astronaut training diver at the NBS (precursor to the NBL) and he was pivotal in bringing scuba training to NASA's Space Camp. I could go on and on, but you'll have to come to (or Zoom into) the November meeting to hear about it from Homer himself. Someone in attendance at Jake's will take home a hardback copy of his latest book Don't Blow Yourself Up.
Homer will be joining us via Zoom on November 17th at 7:30 pm Central.
