Thanks all I'm back in the pool tonight. Will put into use all good tips and give you a happy heads up when complete.

no fins , no push off and start in water. Instructor is now saying may do it in ocean which could be motre or less difficult.

Warm up. It takes at least 15 to 30 minutes of freediving to reach maximum breath holds. Relax and make sure your swimming techniques if efficient. SWimming is a "technique sport", you need to master proper technique and some good coaching goes a long way.

After swimming my laps, I usually rest a bit then swim underwater the length of the pool - which is 25 meters.

I agree with what someone said about being relaxed - I have to wait to get my heart rate down a bit before even attempting it. I don't hyperventilate before starting, so I can't comment about that. I find that if I exhale too quickly, the urge to breathe starts a lot sooner.

A first timer here. I need to do a 25 metre underwater swim as part of my DM certification. No fins. I can make 20 metres after several weeks trice weekly practice. any tips? Time is at a premium ad I can't seem to get this skill.ta. :eyebrow:

I do quite a bit of free diving (snorkeling) for conch and lobster here. I find that the first dive of the day is the hardest, meaning I feel air starved very quickly. But, between dives I rest on the surface, get my heart and breathing rate down again, take three deep breaths and go again. Each dive becomes longer. Why? I don't know. Maybe you get tolerant to the air starving feeling?
So, in your case, try practice the swim three or four times before you actually have to do it. Do it, rest, do it again and I bet each time will become easier. 25 meters isn't that far. I free dive to 15-18 or so and back up with a little bottom time. You'll get it. Hank

well... the need to inhale is triggered by high CO2 in your system, not lack of
O2...

i'm just thinking outloud here... maybe exhaling releases some CO2, thus lessening
the need to inhale?
For me exhaling does help quite a bit when holding my breath underwater. Just release a small, controlled breath every once in awhile and you will be able to hold your breath longer. I haven't figured out if exhaling through my mouth or nose makes any difference.

I agree that this is due to the release of CO2. You are releasing the built up CO2 which will stall the natural triggers for breathing.

Hi magichan,

Heres my 3 tips for the day, practice breath holding, work out more in the pool and try to glide more....

I hope this helps you out ;)
