That brings up another fun point - you know that a hydrotester is required to do a visual inspection to CGA standards, right? So why do we pay the dive shops to do it AGAIN after they come back from hydro? Because the dive industry doesn't like the way they do it?

I pay $3 extra when they're in for hydro. I haven't had any tanks in for VIP only though, so I wonder if they charge more.

This is a fire testing shop btw.

Are you saying you either only VIP once every five years? Or are you saying that you hydro every year?

You guys are spoiled. Here in the Vancouver area I routinely pay $25 each for VIP or hydro because I know which shop to go to. At the shop down in the ritzy part of town I got quoted $75 for one or the other. Sucks to be the guy that walks in there not knowing what things should cost...

Brandon you are absolutely correct, and i have an answer for you. Most shops have minimum skilled monkeys filling tanks saoooo no sticlker no gas. So it costs to get the sticker. Second reason is that the vis is the tank and the valve in regards to geting fills , for hydro the valve has no real purpose in the testing so mnost shops do not do it. for hydro years the hydro date is supposed to serve as the vis date also. You wont see this in practice however. Its easier to slap a sticker on.

Visuals range from $15-$25 up here in Massachusetts which include an air fill. I myself got sick of paying for the visuals, especially since my tank stable has roughly 20 tanks so I do my own visuals.

I suspect they don't want to be held liable for not doing everything PSI requires or don't want to pay the recert fee.

Though, it's also not like the PSI inspection or certification is a legal requirement or regulation of any sort, so I really can't blame them...

The recert fee is a once every 3 year refresher class. $185 or so. But, the PSI course meets a legal requirement as well as a best management practice. One reason I stay current is because I can call PSI with my stupid questions.

LDS does visual after a hydro as the tank is empty when it comes back from hydro. I have found water, bugs, paint flakes , sand in tanks that came back from hydro. We charge $15. For visual, and that includes air fill. Don't like paying $15 for VIP? Then buy a compressor that can cost thousands and do it yourself.

I'm saying that the hour drive isn't worth my time because the price difference is small enough when you consider the included air fill of the dive shops. For hydros it's not such a small difference, and I'll drive it to the shop myself instead of paying $25 more to a dive shop and letting it wait a week before going in.

My hydro shop is also a dive shop. All of my cylinders are O2 clean. Now, I could get the hydro facility to O2 clean them for an extra $75 each, but I am qualified and certified to do it myself. So I get regular old skanky rinse water. The way my cylinders come back is a crime, and I found a new shop because of it.

I do the same, (assuming the stable of tanks you reference is your own and not ones you rent out.) If anything goes wrong i have no ine to sue but my self.
