Key West, FL- Racers start your propellers! This May the Wreck Racing League is diving back into the Florida waters for the 2011 Formula H2O Racing Circuit. The Wreck Racing League is pleased to announce its Key West return for the 2nd Annual Vandenberg Underwater Grand Prix. On May 20th- 22nd divers will race around the superstructure of the Vandenberg using Diver Propulsion Vehicles (DPVs), or scooters, in the action-packed sport of Formula H2O Racing.
Last June, the Wreck Racing League and Formula H2O made their debut in Key West, FL honoring the one year anniversary of the sinking of the Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg as an artificial reef off the coast of Key West, FL.

Events kickoff Friday, May 20th, 2011 at 8:00pm with the Racer’s Meeting aboard the M/V Spree. A new safety installment this season is the requirement of all racers to be DPV certified. Saturday morning, during the Spree’s first dive, Indian Valley Scuba will offer divers the DPV Certification class for only $30. Following certification, enjoy reef and wreck dives, scooter demos, and race practice.
On Sunday, May 22nd, 2011 racers will compete in the Vandenberg Underwater Grand Prix with awards ceremony to follow. This race is certain to be a dynamic start to the underwater racing season.
The Wreck Racing League and Formula H2O are working to spread worldwide awareness to the necessity of artificial reefs and their vital role in our oceans. In addition to artificial reefs being a crucial ecosystem building block, the creation of Formula H2O, using ship wrecks as race tracks, has developed a new recreational demand for these reefs. Formula H2O and the artificial reefs are not just for the racers, spectators of all ages, divers and snorkelers, are encouraged to come join in the action.
Please visit Sanctioned by the Wreck Racing League for registration and more information. All interested DPV manufacturers or distributors, as well as anyone interested in competing or participating in this event, should contact Natalie Oriente at natalie@wreckracingleague.com.
