I'm going to try this soon. It started by getting a AL40 bailout bottle for self sufficient diving. But then I thought, well instead of weighting my other side to offset the the weight of the AL40, why not get another AL40? And so I did, and have been playing with the mounting (bungie from plate + hip d-ring) in the basement dive shop. I really like how it feels and cant wait to give it a try in the water, hopefully in January. I looked around to see if there was anyone else diving this configuration and was a little surprised that i really didn't see anyone doing it for long recreational dives. Just curious what your thoughts are, is this a Frankenstein configuration for some reason I'm not aware of?

Yes. If you're extending range there are better ways. If you're creating redundancy there are better ways. Your method adds equipment/complexity/drag/failure points without an offsetting improvement in either of the above dimensions.

If you're extending range - Yes, that is what I was thinking.
If you're creating redundancy - Yes, that was my goal.

I know a group that did that, but backwards. Did sidemount with a pair of 80s or 100s and back mounted an AL40 of deco gas. Not the most conventional, but worked for the planed dives.

Doubles or side mount will accomplish your goals better.
Maybe I wasn't clear before. I am diving 2 40's in a typical side mount setup. This accomplishes my goal of redundancy for solo diving and also gives me a bit more gas. Additionally, it gives me the opportunity to do side mount drills on shore dives where as I wouldn't be packing 2 side mount 80's or a doubles setup for a typical shore dive.

You were very clear before and perhaps breathe less and enjoy more fun than some

Mate you are innovative, a genius unencumbered, keep doing what you are doing

I Just came back from a one tank hour plus distant shallow fun shore dive with 150bar at least

Solo

Didn't even look at my gauges

Might even leave them behind next time to save air

Exactly!

Soon we'll have to get you building a chest mount rebreather to fit between those tanks
