My wife and I are discussing going on our first liveaboard trip. We are both pretty new to diving (25 dives). Does anyone know of any 2- 4 day live aboard operations (US/Carribean/ Mexico) that they could recommend? We'd like to start with a shorter trip to see how we like it vs booking a week and discovering we hate it halfway through the trip.
Thanks very much.

Fling Charters out of Freeport, TX, but I think you ought to have more experience and the Gulf of Mexico is not the Caribbean. No island to use as a windbreak. I've not done it yet; conditions are seasonal and trips subject to cancellation due to weather.

California has some short live-aboard trips, but cold water diving.

Ironically, I suspect a 7 day Caribbean trip with benign conditions is more likely to please you guys at this stage. A Belize live-aboard could be a good choice.

That's probably a common feeling. My wife and I were unsure if we would like a liveaboard trip, so our first trip we booked a 5-day trip (so that's 4 days of diving). The days flew by, and by the last day we wished we had booked a full week trip, if not longer.

If interested in California, I highly recommend Truth Aquatics: Truth Aquatics | -- drrich2 has done an outstanding trip report on them.
Another convenient resource for multi day CA trips is found here: Channel Islands Dive Adventures
Water temps in the Channel Islands ranges from low to mid 50's in the winter and slowly climbing into the upper 60's and even low 70's by late summer/fall.

Fun Azul fleet does 5-7 day Sea of Cortez trips out of La Paz,Mexico, August- November

I can totally understand the thinking that trying a shorter trip first seems safer in case you don't like it. But I would argue that it's possible starting with a shorter trip may cause you to dislike it. Much of this is because of the accommodations available, especially for a couple. It's more common for trips of a week or more to be on boats that have individual cabins with en-suite baths and other amenities. It's more common for shorter trips to be on boats with bunk arrangements and a few shared heads and showers and generally less space.

Shorter trips certainly have their place, they're great if one of those trips does a specific itinerary you want, fits your schedule, budget, is somewhat local so you can do a quick trip without flying, whatever - and you understand what you're getting into, which you may not if you've never lived on a boat before. But if you're not tightly constrained by time or budget and want a nice dive vacation with your spouse, I agree odds are you'd find a week on a nicer boat more enjoyable than roughing it for a few days. On a short trip, you also lose some of the experience of setting up once and diving for many days with little effort, which is a large part of the attraction. There is an extremely good chance you'll feel like you just got started and really don't want to rinse and dry and pack up yet.

The classic week long Aggressor type boats itineraries are prac

Me too. If that sounds strange, I operated one of that type boat (and Damselfish was on it) for many years. The next boat will be very different.

If you book with a reputable live-aboard, the Aggressor for example, one week is always too damned short and you'll wish you had more diving days. I wouldn't spend the money to go on a trip for just 4 days, too much trouble for few days of diving. If local, maybe.
