I am looking for any words of wisdom on dive site's in Cozumel :eyebrow: - I am an AW,AOW,RSC Diver - with at least 90+ dives - looking for information on current diving (drift) and a dive called Devils throat which I was told is a MUST Do! Iv not dove in strong currents before (im a great lakes diver)- are all of Cozumels dive fast current? :06: are there any I should not try... please advise if you have any insite -

The current is only a problem if you want to stop and look at something and you won't feel it till you pop out of the Devils Throat. Palancar and Columbia are beautiful reefs but not much fish.
The shallower dives where most of the fish are have less current. Since every dive is a drift dive the current really doesn't matter, the boat is following you, well most of the time.

I was in Coz for a day and did two drift dives. My log book notes the location as Santa Rosa for the first dive and San Francisco for the second dive. Second dive was shallower than the first and as noted by Lat. Adjustment the fish were far more numerous and the colors were awesome. As for the current, it moved at a nice clip but wasn't difficult to deal with when I wanted to stop and take pictures or look at the little creatures.

Send a PM to Christi, she has a dive operation in Coz and can probably answer all your questions. If you haven't made arrangements yet, her operation would be well worth your consideration.

Of course we want a trip report when you get back--with pictures ;)

A great second dive after Devil's Throat is Deliala, the last time I dove it I counted 39 Queen Angels.....lots of color.

Thanks to all that repiled... :god: I will be sure to check out the suggestions!

I do already have a place to stay - We are staying at the Scuba Club of Cozumel - any opinions :06: And it will be the week of Carnival! :dazzler1: I cant wait... :jump:

Trip report w/pix will be posted upon my return.

Safe diving!

If you're comfortable with your descents and have decent buoyancy control, Devil's Throat (Punta Sur) should be no problem. The entry can be a little tricky depending on the conditions, but the dive masters should be able to guide you. You need to be able to equalize reasonably quickly as you need to drop down to the entry point also reasonably quickly, otherwise you may overshoot.

I think the key to drift diving in Cozumel is when you want to stop and look at something, find a corel head to hide behind and anchor yourself to the sand at the bottom. Actually, Cozumel is a great place for people who like to take it easy, because the drift takes you along! You can't fight it comfortably, but I did see a nurse shark that didn't have any problem with it! Some spots have very little current, so you might find some of those. If you are a lake diver, you will find this no problem! Have a great time!

"Dive! Dive! Dive!" That's what you'll hear as soon as you step off the boat in Coz. Reason being, they don't want you to drift off the reef on the surface. You dive down, and start drifting. The current really isn't anything to worry about, as you will be going along with it, mostly. It's what I would call, nice easy diving. You'll find, that surface intervals in COZ tend to be a lot shorter than you may be used to. On most two tank trips, you'll do a dive to 80-85, then a second to 50-60. I've been diving in Fiji, Monterey(local), Hawaii, Puerto Vallarta, and Cozumel. My two favorite destination places for diving would be Cozumel, then Fiji. Cozumel has the best bang for the buck, IMHO.

BTW - rent a car for a day, at least, and go explore the island...it's well worth it.

have fun!

Wisdom? Here?...Yeah Delvil's throat is a nice dive, it's WAY far south on reef, a pretty deep dive you can go +100'. the last time i did it in Sept. the visabl. was reall wierd. very poor at the surface to about 25'-30' then it cleared up. we didn't see too much sea life. but the swim thru was cool.
Currents can vary, depending on time of year, weather conditions, ect. I usually am there April-May or late Aug. early Sept. The currents are very gentle most of the time. If I'm taking pictures I can usually turn my head facing it and gently kick and hover over my subject.
We did make a night dive on this last trip where the current was REALLY strong but it was kind of fun flying through the water like Superman. You had to look fast to see anything because it went by like you were doing 20m.p.h. in a car and looking down at the side of the road. That is the only time I have experienced anything like that though.
Ditto on Deliala, Paradise reef although very shallow is always full of life, any of the wall dives are cool, I like to swim out over the deep blue and just hover there for a while, kind of freaks some people out, but I like it.
We usually let the DM's make suggestions for sites. they dive the place every day and know what are the best that particular week.
Really, I don't think there is a "bad" dive site there, it's all beautiful!!!!!!!!!

have a great trip and happy diving!!!

Scuba Club is a pretty decent place IMO. We stayed there a couple years (3?) ago. Too bad the drinks aren't included in the price, as it will add to your bill a tad. Luckily, there's a "wal-mart" (Chedraul??) across the street to stock the fridge with. That's what we did, and it was fine. The dinners were pretty good when we were there. The lunches were so-so. Nothing much to complain about. The staff was friendly to us, and the place was clean.

We went off-season, and since diving with SCC is part of the price, we had a problem getting people to do the afternoon dives with us, as they needed a minimum, and there simply wasn't that many guests staying there at the time (Plus most people only wanted 2 dives a day and maybe a shore dive (Which isn't all that bad) instead of paying for a 3rd dive of the day).

It's located a short walking distance to town, and we walked in every day. It's a great place really, but I think it's a bit out of step for us. Too bad to, as the location is ideal.

Have fun!
