Gilligan,
I've seen the reference to the soft beverage cooler before, but never really understood it...
Is it just an empty one, with no blue ice or anything (would create condensation???), just to have a soft padded cover, is that all?? or are you putting fresh water in it or ??

thanx...

cancun mark:
you could always take the housing down to that depth without the camera in it for a test dive.

Yes Mark,
But the problem, indicated earlier somewhere around here, is that it might work just fine for one or three times... but sure as shoot'n it'll pop a leak either by pressing a button or banging it accidently or ??? so takeing it down w/o the camera would probably work, hehheh, probably guarnteed to work just fine :D , but might give a false sense of security... thinking, "Oh, well I've taken it down to 130' and it didn't leak...." heheheh..

it won't,
not until you put the camera in...
THEN it'll leak...
it's the way of the UW Housings... :D
It's in their gene code...
It'll always surprise you at the worst possible moment...
:eyebrow:

A Divermaster in the Caymans said that if you took a housing to or even beyond its depth limit, it would just distort the case to the point that the buttons would not be able to be pushed. He said it probably wouldn't leak unless you went way past the depth limit.

I just bought the A75 and it's really rockin. I'm thoroughly impressed with it. The A80 is only going to be better underwater since it has a larger effective area per pixel on the CCD than tha A75, so less noise.

My only suggestion is to check that yellow O-ring very well every time you close it for a dive to make sure there's nothing on it that could allow water to pass through. My A75 housing is rated to 130 feet. My old Elph S200 housing was rated to 100 feet and did me fine down to 90 feet.

fpoole,
I don't place anything in the soft cooler such as cold packs, water etc. I just put the camera/housing in it and zip it up. It is insulated as it is. I keep my entire camera rig in one in direct sunlight on the deck of my kayak while paddling to and from my dive sites and have never experienced any condensation or heat problems.
Some say you can use it as a rinse tank in a pinch. I tried it with one of mine and it must have had a small leak in it cause it didn't hold water.

I brought mine S200 down to 98 feet and the display busted. The camera still works fine but the display doesn't work at all. Don't bring it below 80ft.

That doesn't make any sense. How'd the display bust?

thanks everyone for your advice, im going to st thomas in a month and not sure what depths ill be at, anyways,
fpoole, what do you mean cut some strips? thanks
I used to work at st.thomas for a short period.long time ago at aqua action/secret harbor..most of the dives are relatively shallow..you should have no problems.

The Canon A-75/A-80 are great camera's. Our housing hit a little leak and there was some moisture in it when we got back to the boat (A-75). The camera still works but the LCD flickers a bit. So off EBay we picked up an A-80 (fits in the same housing) for a good price. My suggestion is to order a couple spare o-ring kits from Canon, use the originals when storing the housing and use one new when diving, and one new one as a spare. The o-rings last a long time if you take good care of them. But after a year or so just replace them. Cheaper than a new camera.

Chris

Justin:

If depth is an issue and you think you might be going beyond the 100ft mark...I would recommend preparing for that ahead of time and going with the Ikelite housing for that camera. It is rated to 200 feet.
