    Dive Medicals

Should dive medicals be mandatory? Simple question yes or no, though would be interested in your thoughts if no, if yes when should a dive have a medical? prior to a course, every year, 5 or 10 years etc I think this is a very important discussion the dive industry needs to have, particularly...

“Duty of Care” when taking others on personal vessel, to dive

Just don't be negligent, has worked well for me so far.

Vertical vs Horizontal Perception of Distance

To me it is difficult to comprehend the depth of water above having done many 50, 80 and some 100m dives. At 100m being on a rich trimix does not feel any different to any other deep dive, now when I look up at a tall building that is 50 or 75m high (the tallest building in my city) and I think...

Why no more crotch strap on wetsuits?

No not an option, they just don't cut the mustard for cooler waters, I have Cressi Ice 7mm semi-dry which I love for summer diving in waters 16C+, for anything cooler they are not up to it.

Why no more crotch strap on wetsuits?

Been looking for a two-piece wet suit for my daughter, there are very few about now. The trend is for the one-piece suit but these are nowhere near as warm as a two-piece for our cooler waters (10-16C). The only model I can find in the Australian market are the Seatec suits...

    Rare Pink Handfish Filmed

These are such amazing little fish they use their petrel fins like modified hands and lop around on the bottom. There are 14 species of handfish found in southern eastern Australia of which 9 are endemic to the coastal waters of Tasmania in depth from a few metres to around 300m. Most are only...

    Rare Pink Handfish Filmed

Discovery of a rare and endangered pink handfish on the wreck of the SS Tasman on the Tasman Peninsula, Tasmania at a depth of 70m. The pink handfish has only been seen by divers on three other occasions. These are the first images of the pink handfish taken by divers in its natural...

What would you do if you saw someone diving a tank marked "For paintball use only"?

Nothing, just mind my own business. If they are in my group I might ask what is up with the tank, and I am sure an appropriate explanation will be given.

    Cold water & wet suit

Having dived a 7mm two piece and a semi dry suit for many years, a semi dry is not as warm as a two piece. I have a semi dry that I wear in water 16C or greater for hunter gather and NDL dives anything less it is a dry suit. If I wanted to wear a wetsuit in colder water (7C-16C), I would be...

    GUE JJ configuration

Yes I realise that units like the RB80 used by GUE in those projects utilise the large onboard tanks, and the gas in those tanks is needed to drive the unit being a gas extender, and I can see the clear rational if you have a need to use one of those units and the team to support those dives...

    GUE JJ configuration

The thing smacks of a rebreather configuration designed by committee and work shopped to hell and back to solve problems that don't exist. No doubt involving the greatest GUE minds, and they come up with a rig that weighs the best part of 60kg FFS. I have no problem with GUE I like what they...

    GUE JJ configuration

Have not kept up with this thread. However, did a week of diving recently with a GUE diver with the JJ in GUE configuration. This was the first time I had seen the JJ GUE configuration in the wild and I got to say what an abomination!! First off, the thing is a two person lift wherever you have...

Why do people add a few minutes to their last deco stop?

No nothing about cutting short the last stop. I find I get certain niggles if I ascend from the last stop at 6m to the surface at the "normal" rate on deep dives (70-100m) that require long deco (90 plus minutes). I now set my shallowest stop at 3m, when 6m stop clears I continue to hang out...
