Diving in Ontario for the Newbie! Tips, Advice, Experienced Buddies.

The St. Clair river is one of my favorite dive sites - easy entries, easy exits and a bunch of different parts of the river accessible for divers. It would probably be a 2 to 2.5 hour drive. There are lots of local divers from the area that are more then happy to act as tour guides (no charge -...

June 30th - 2 spots left for Tradewind/Crystal wrecks in Lake Erie Charter

I just had 2 people back out of a charter that I am putting together out of Port Dover to dive the incredibly intact wooden sailing ships - Tradewind and Crystal. Both of these wrecks are from the mid-1800's and are incredibly intact. Both dives are in the 120' range. If you are interested in...

ISO settings for 2G vs 1G

I am in the midst of upgrading from the 1G to 2G and I was just wondering if anyone has any experience on how the ISO settings on the 2 camera's compare. I normally have the ISO set as low as possible on the 1G which works great on tropical diving but when I am diving wrecks in the Great Lakes...

Where to get certified in/near Sarnia

I believe the play it again sports store in Sarnia also has a scuba section and the store owner is an instructor. Once you get certified - drop me a note or visit Red Devil Scuba in Chatham as we have a pretty busy schedule throughout the year and would be happy to have you join us on some of...

    sarnia diving

Hey findingbode, To answer your question on tanks - hasn't been a problem so far. I dive in Port Sanilac a couple times a year and last weekend I was in Mackinac and no issues then either. As for dive site suggestions - if it is wreckage that you are looking for, I'd suggest the William H...

    Diver missing in Ontario

Fair points. I wasn't present when this accident occured so although I doubt what I am about to suggest actually played out but I would like to know what some others think. Hypothetically speaking if after the course was completed and the instructor is sitting with the 2 new divers over lunch...

    Diver missing in Ontario

There is 1 person definitely at fault - the deceased. For not taking personal responsibility for his safety. This was a tragedy that could have been prevented. I have buddied up with many divers for the first time that they have done this dive and everyone of them has done a double take as soon...

    Diver missing in Ontario

I would love to hear that from a lawyer. I am curious which agency your instructor teaches for? If instructors are passing along that kind of information to their students then there is a major issue. I can see it now, "don't worry if you aren't comfortable in the water, here is your card anyway...

    Wanted: Dive Buddy in London

Feel free to shoot me a PM if you are looking for a buddy for Sarnia area. I'm not a huge fan of Innerkip but I regularily dive Sarnia. I live in Chatham but work in Parkhill so Sarnia can definitely be arranged to be on my way home if you are thinking of diving in the evening. Weekends are also...

    Diver missing in Ontario

Even if he was no longer in the role of an instructor? From what I've been told, the course was completed prior to this dive so I am curious why you feel there would still exist a "standard of care". I'm not a lawyer but I do regularly dive with people who I have trained so I'm wondering if (and...

    Diver missing in Ontario

AFAIK, the autopsy results haven't been released and I have not heard anything about the status of the equipment. Narcosis is highly unlikely due to the depth (maximum depth at this location is 60' at most). There is some information starting to come out from the local community but in my...

    Diver missing in Ontario

To add to the situation - one of the experienced buddies was apparently the deceased's OW instructor. So is there a case to be made that the point of "diving within your limits in conditions similar to what you've been trained in" wasn't made, or wasn't made clear enough? I also wonder how many...

    Diver missing in Ontario

Personally I would have no issue with the $30 ... I pay $20 per year to dive in Tobermory and that is just one area so $30 for an entire province sounds pretty good to me. I also get a little pep talk with that $20 reminding me that the Arabia and Forest City are deep, cold and extra precaution...

    Diver missing in Ontario

Although I haven't had the opportunity to dive in Quebec so I can't speak directly to the FQAS concept, I do wonder if the fact that $30 causes people to pack up and drive to another province doesn't say something about the kind of people that are trying to avoid it. Maybe it isn't such a bad...

    Diver missing in Ontario

According to the Detroit Free Press - an instructor plus 2 students ... it looks like a tragedy but if it turns out to be OW students ... I'll be speechless Canadian and U.S. rescuers continue to search for a diver missing from near the Blue Water Bridge since Monday afternoon. An instructor...

    sarnia diving

Hi Fernie, I'm not aware of any charters running out of Sarnia - there are some further up the shore on the American side (around Port Sanilac). The diving in Sarnia and the St. Clair river is primarily shore diving and the current is much faster then Cozumel. Right in Sarnia you are looking at...

    Diver missing in Ontario

Not good to hear this. I dive this location fairly regularly and the weather we've been having lately would likely have had a very adverse impact on the visibility. Throw in some pretty strong and at times, unpredictable, currents and I can only question how wise the decision to do this dive...

What are your biggest pet peeves?

My everyday pet peeve is now showing up in diving - Fuel Surcharges, or more specifically fuel surcharges with no explanation as to how it was calculated. I understand that fuel prices have become extremely volatile and if I'm booking on a charter a month or two in advance that operators need to...

    Chilly in the River

The way this spring is going ... late May, Early June. Water temperatures at that time should be in the high 40's and maybe the low 50's. I was in the river on Apr. 11th and the water was a balmy 33 degrees with ice floating down the middle of the river.
