Grand cayman - a dive destination anymore?

I don't think that Grand Cayman has ever been the best diving. The sister islands were always better. But as you say it's a great middle-ground for a group that has non-divers and/or want really amazing higher-end food and beverages. It was what attracted us to Grand Cayman in the first...

Trip Report First trip to Grand Cayman - December '24

That dive is no more, apparently - a casualty of COVID. The rays weren't fed (unlike at the sandbar) and they are gone. Efforts to bring them back have not been successful, from what I hear.

Trip Report First trip to Grand Cayman - December '24

You definitely got some horrible weather - the past couple of months haven't been great for divers, for sure. It's only been the in the past couple of days that I have seen ops heading north. Honestly if you didn't see walls and swim-throughs, then you weren't going to the right sites (which...

    Southern Cross Club

Saw 2 on one dive off the North side of Grand Cayman last year. They are definitely out there.

    6mb?

When I considered buying property on Grand Cayman the realtor said that in his opinion it wasn't worth looking seriously at SMB. He said you won't get the same return on your investment as other waterfront property and there is less likelihood of damage and zero of beach erosion when you don't...

Caymans at a crossroads on mega cruise ships?

As I understand it, not they don't - only citizens.

Caymans at a crossroads on mega cruise ships?

OK this may be cynical, but the island doesn't decide. It's the politicians that do. Caymanians are the only ones that allow them to vote, but after that the big money concerns start weighing in and "influencing" the politicians. So "the will of the people" often doesn't make it to reality...

    Hurricane Ivan

An event like that is always going to have a profound effect on a community. They realised that their building standards were really lax. They realised that not regulating the insurance industry on island meant that when disaster happens, they could just disappear. A lot of places couldn't be...

    Question Grand Cayman recommendations

Sun Divers is no more. Olin decided to go into retirement. The operation was taken over by Nat at Indepth Watersports. Nothing much has changed with the setup - they took a lot of damage during the February storm this year that meant a bit of a rebuild and the Cracked Conch are starting some...

    Question Grand Cayman recommendations

There are definitely different parts of the island away from the SMB corridor. Do you find groceries to be any cheaper out East? Or even on the sister islands?

    Question Grand Cayman recommendations

Sorry but I respectfully disagree. GC is far more developed than the sister islands, but for some that is an attraction, given that you can find what you want food-wise, shopping, etc. I understand that is not what some are looking for but I don't think it justifies your blanket statement. If...

Anyone ever stayed at Paradise Pointe in Grand Cayman?

I have stayed there twice, probably a decade apart. Decent place. Everything works and is functional. Very clean. The staff are friendly and helpful. The location is perfect for West Bay Dock and the West Bay Fosters grocery store. I would say that it is a great no-frills place for divers...

    Trip Report Caymans Trip Report

There are 2 renovated 3BR units in the block closest to the road that has a pool right off the patio (103, and 104). Units 101 and 102 need some renovation but are also 3BR units. These are all available for short-term rentals. There are 4 2BR units in the middle of the complex, a short walk...

Have SB divers lost interest in GC?

From my experiences diving off the west side of GC over this past winter.... The shore dive sites seem to have taken quite a hit from storms. The shallows are going to take quite a while to recover, but I did see a school of 7 rainbow parrotfish in the shallows off Macabuca, feeding off algae...

    Unhappy Earth Day

Based on what I have seen, bleaching is pretty much a pure white, and the textures are intact. Stony Coral Disease is mainly grey and causes the surfaces to smooth more. That's not a scientific comparison, of course. :-)

    Unhappy Earth Day

That is very sad. It sounds like the coral recovered better on GC than LC, and that surprises me.

Calico Jacks - anything like it?

Honestly, setting up like that at Cemetery Beach has been my go-to for a while, now. When conditions allow it a snorkel out to the coral heads and fingers was a really nice break, too. Beer and cold patties on the beach were a treat

Calico Jacks - anything like it?

I didn't. We had some odd weather this winter and the winds were often pretty strong out of the North and North West - the days when I wasn't sick with the chest cold that was going around on island, or had non-diving company, the weather didn't make the north side available. A few people said...
