Emperor Echo damaged; guests and crew safe.

Well, I once heard from a dive guide that there are 170 liveaboards operating in the Red Sea. I can't vouch for the accuracy of that number, but there sure are lots and lots and lots of liveaboards here. So with that many boats, a "worldwide average" accident rate will lead to many more incidents.

    Red Sea November 2023

I am in Hurghada right now after a great week of diving. The situation in Gaza and Israel is very difficult, but it is far away from here.

    Diving in Croatia

Define "too cold". Water temperature in mid-September in Krk was 61 F/16 C, which is quite OK in a 7 mm wetsuit or drysuit. Warmer than my dive Saturday in 41 F/5 C water temperatures (Lake Michigan, USA)... I don't know about the water temperatures near Dubrovnik area in mid April, however.

New wreck near Chicago found August 2020

Captain Nicole of Double Action Charters spotted what looked like a wreck on sonar while coming back from a different wreck site, and I got to join Double Action when they went to check it out for the first time on August 26, 2020 (thanks to Mike Pedersen!). It is indeed a wreck, and it was...

Virgin Gorda post hurricane / wrecks

We went to Virgin Gorda five years in a row (2004-2009) as new divers, and loved it. Then our daughter (who was 14 at the time) wanted more activities in a vacation destination... Now it's just Chris and Holly, and we are really psyched to return to dive with DiveBVI in April 2020! We've dived...

Truk Odyssey with a mixed group: yowza!

We are back from a great two weeks in diving, first in Palau (Palau Royal Resort and Sam's Tours) and then on the Truk Odyssey. Palau was great, with highlights including a real shark parade while drifting along a wall, and snapper spawning. I did a liveaboard (Ocean Hunter I) in 2009, and I...

Croatia. What is good? And what do I avoid?

Two of my good friends live in Zagreb, and they took me once to Krk on the coast. I had a great time diving! I brought my own gear (I always do when I travel) so I can't tell you about the equipment, but the boat owner's shop (Diver Krk) seemed pretty well equipped and he was a very experienced...

    Perdix vs Petrel battery life

Wow, I used my Perdix on 40 dives this year, half of them cold. I did change the battery before the last 4 dives, but more as a precaution.

Dive 3.0 Computers for aging eyes

I have a Shearwater Perdix AI. I'm 57 and have bifocals (well, progressives) but the Perdix is large and bright so I have no problem reading it. It's a bonus that I can see the tank pressure, too (though I also have a SPG for backup, since I do some tec diving). For a while I used 2.0 diopter...

Looking for a dive buddy! I live in Wheeling, IL

Get some more inland dives (Haigh, Pearl Quarry etc.) into your log, and then head out to Lake Michigan. Chicago Scuba Meetup is a great place to meet active dive buddies, and we do lots of charters in the summer.

Going to Anilao solo... ...recommendations please

I am going to have about 4 days free on a trip to Asia in November and have contemplated various options including Phuket, and places near Cebu, but I am thinking I will return yet again to Club Ocellaris in Anilao. As drbill has pointed out, they put an emphasis on diving. I have been there...

Looking to move from Suunto to petrel 1/2 or perdix, few questions on differences

I moved from a Suunto Cobra 3 to a Perdix AI. I love the Perdix! More info on the display, nice and bright display, bluetooth downloads to MacDive with no expensive USB connector required, more flexible now that I am a tec diver... The Perdix is awesome!

    Shearwater Perdix AI

I recently got a Perdix AI and I am loving it. Great informative display. No problems with Bluetooth synch with MacDive on my iPhone 6S and MacBook Pro 13" (2016), and of course the logs get synchronized between the iPhone and MacBook via Dropbox.

    Ilhabela - Any recent experiences?

I was just at Ilhabela at the end of March, diving with Colonial Divers. We just dived at Ilha das Cabral which is right across a narrow channel from the shop. It was nice and fishy, though the visibility was not great (6 meters?) due to a heavy rain the night before. Rocky bottom with few...

    Scratches/Perdix

I thought the plastic film was supposed to be removed before use, and then I scratched the screen on my very first dive with the new computer. Shucks! But A) the scratch is not visible underwater and B) thanks to the hints I've ordered two screen protector films from Dive Gear Express so...
