XS Scuba manifolds with engravings vs HOG manifolds without.

I, for one, am glad that these valves now warn you about what should and shouldn't go in them. Haven't you heard the news? Hundreds of people are blowing themselves up every day by putting O2 into cylinders with valves that don't have these warnings, simply because they didn't know any better...

    P-Valve, care & use

Generally speaking, most people's urine hovers around a pH of 7, varying throughout the day. The 5% white vinegar you buy in the store has a pH of ~2.4. Don't forget that pH is logarithmic, so vinegar is approximately 40,000x as acidic as most people's urine. (10^[7-2.4]) = 39,810) Just to...

Halcyon Evolve 60 for new rec diver, single tank, overkill?

I usually brace my thumb and index finger against the dump valve itself, and pinch the string between a few fingers. This allows me to precisely vent exactly how much gas I want. Works great on my Halcyon Eclipse 30. Easy to do if you first "encircle" the valve with your index finger. No...

Halcyon Evolve 60 for new rec diver, single tank, overkill?

The fatter string is definitely nice. On the other hand, tying a second knot about a half-inch above the knot at the end of the string makes just about any string quite easy to grab.

    refusing an instabuddy

To add to what TSandM has so nicely spelled out -- there's a good chance that if you are in an OOA situation, either you or the other diver might be huffing and puffing from the surprise and stress. You might just suck down that gas you left in reserve much faster than you'd expect...and then...

Help with back kick and helicopter turns

Another suggestion: Learn to do the kicks WITHOUT FINS ON. You can move surprisingly quickly, backwards, doing a back kick with just your feet. Same with helicopter turns -- you can spin around all day long without fins if you have good technique. I can actually kick backwards faster without...

    Skipping the pre-dive checks

Having been the guy puking and desperate to get in the water...:depressed: ...get in the water ASAP (assuming your gas is on and you're diving a balanced rig). I like doing a good pre-dive checklist as much as anyone else, but after you've been puking for 3 hours straight on the ride to the...

    refusing an instabuddy

Man, it's almost like they were part of a standardized diving system or something...where everything was the same...

A few generalized questions about Bonaire -- namely, electricity requirements

Hello all, I have some friends who are taking some time off from life and moving to Bonaire from the US for just over a year. They plan on doing lots of diving and I'm sure sight-seeing and whatever else they want. They do have a few questions regarding the electricity requirements of living...

    DIR/GUE Attitude: I just don't see it

I did my GUE-F with Ed. He's now a "former" GUE instructor? If so, that is sad -- he's a great guy and fantastic instructor.

Tell Dive Store Owners How You Feel

Nope...just one so far. Walked out with a set of double AL80s on my back, and went to a shop a bit further away that has great customer service, and gives me exactly the fills I want.

Tell Dive Store Owners How You Feel

My biggest annoyance with dive shops: fills. I've never liked the idea of paying for "fills". I want to pay by the cubic foot. When filling up your car with fuel, do you pay by the unit or do you pay by the "tank"? I also hate it when dive shops demand that I put silly stickers on my tanks...

Both. Is this some sort of trick question? :depressed:

Here's how to strip aluminum tanks...

I WISH I had success like this with stripping cylinders. I have (4) AL40s that were ordered as brushed aluminum but showed up as neon green. To make a long story short I couldn't send them back. Thus I tried to strip the paint -- so far I have used three different paint strippers, and the...

Photon Torpedo Vs Halcyon Mini Scout Review

I've been out of the loop for awhile -- when did Halcyon release a new Scout? I went to their webpage but didn't find anything. edit: I see now. Anyone know if that module fits in a Photon-Torpedo? I left one of my PE-LEDs sitting around with the batteries in it for awhile (whoops). One of...

    Diver Initials on Tanks

Sounds like it performed admirably -- you had to think about it. :eyebrow: That's the whole purpose of labeling gas, right? ;)

    Halcyon bp "pad" removal

Step 1: Hold female part of sex bolt against the backplate with your thumb to keep it from moving. Step 2: Unscrew male part of sex bolt. I've never had to use vice grips or anything else, and I've undone a zillion of these.

    Worthington hydro

Because there's nothing wrong with the cylinders? Sometimes hot-dipped galvanized steel cylinders aren't perfectly round. However, adding that much pressure to them makes them as perfectly round as they'll get. As an extreme example, think of a garden hose before and after turning the water...
