    what the heck is it?

Maybe, but I was thinking the AH would be the hydro mark - next to the hydro date. I'm wondering if I should just replace these. They lack any of the normal marks they showed us in VIP training, no alloy, no DOT. These marks on the top are the only marks anywhere. They are expensive though, so...

    what the heck is it?

In this image, is the AEH a manufacturer's mark? If so, who? This is a filter housing.

High Island 389-A Rig @ FGB

It's nearly 100 miles, I know you were kidding, as was I. What's 10 more miles among 90, right? One thing I didn't mention though was the experience of the diver. If you've never dove a rig before, then I retract all of that. The water there is DEEP and you must be able to manage your depth. I...

High Island 389-A Rig @ FGB

100 miles off shore, oh my! It's not quite 100 miles offshore... ;) The rig is at 27 deg 54.2' N and 093 deg 34.4' W. The trouble with going to dive the rig is that it isn't always diveable. I don't believe in all the inviolate dive rules that the scuba priests pass down, but in this case I...

High Island 389-A Rig @ FGB

In this one case I agree with you that it might be worth keeping the thing in tact, but eventually it will begin falling apart. Once it starts to really fall apart it will be much harder to remove. I like the reef-in-place concept, but I think we can afford cutting them off at 60fsw. There are...

    tooth dives in Venice?

Great! I'll give it a look in a few days and check the viz reports. Anyone with numbers want to come along? I have some numbers but I don't know how good they are. I've been told that if you get in the vicinity it doesn't matter much, especially after a mix up. Is it easy to get good fills...

    tooth dives in Venice?

So, I'm wondering how much Debby is stirring things up down south. Is it rough enough to uncover some new stuff? I just bought a boat that is burning a hole in my pocket AND I have 28 days off! Somebody tell me if I should consider the trek to Venice... xposted in FL section

Anyone Know of a good Fl boat course?

It depends on what you want out of your course. The Auxilliary courses are good curriculum but often taught by folks who have only read the curriculum (no real experience). You'll get a little better perspective from a school like Chapman. Otherwise, any course you find will be about the same.

    What more would you do?

I'm not a believer in the automatic astronomical value of our license. When the coast guard abrogated their responsibility to exam license candidates and allowed the schools (license mills) to start selling them, I gave up on the inherent value of the credential. You don't have to look far in a...

Choosing a Dive Shop for a Flower Gardens trip

I don't think there's really any difference. The dive shop will usually get to send a "trip leader" for selling so many trip, so if you really want or don't want to be diving with some particular shop guys that may help you decide. Once you're on the boat it doesn't matter much who you came...

    TWIC News

In what amounts to an admission of how terribly the TSA blows, they announced yesterday that they're cutting us a small break in the renewal of our TWIC. http://www.tsa.gov/assets/pdf/TWIC_Expiration_Policy_Bulletin.pdf You can renew for three years for 60 bucks and only have to make a single...

    Kayak Diving

Over all, I'd say the entire Hobie line tend toward barges. But I'm not knocking them for it. A barge is handy for diving, and the propulsion systems make life easier too. My friend fishes in Texas from a Scupper Pro (from OK, not Hobie) and, well, it's kinda a barge, too. I would not consider...

    Gulf Rig Diving

Unfortunately, I think a lot of the time the idea is just to oppose anything the oil companies propose. Kind of like congress, come to think of it.

    Keeping Fish on the Line?

Sorry your thread got hijacked by the buddy nazis. My first dive after cert was also solo. It didn't go as planned, but I was safe enough. I don't regret it. About half of all my diving since cert has been solo. I spent a lot of time and money getting into it and I'm going diving! I try to get...

Compressor lifespan and low pressure tanks?

I have never encountered any shop that charges a per ft rate. I've seen HP tanks cost a little bit more (and therefore the 3K tanks cost less). I've also run into many shops that will top off a tank for the regular rate of an MT tank and some that will top it off for free to encourage you to...

    What more would you do?

Yeah, there's really nothing much you can do. You might video the guy in hopes that he will break the rules, like approaching within 50(?) ft of your dive flag. I think 50 is the rule in FL. Then turn it over to the state po-pos. The Coast Guard isn't going to care too much about his...

Learning to pilot a small boat in near coastal waters

I had a mate once whose dad told him, if you want to learn to really run a boat, go to Louisiana. You'll F-up the boat, tear $h1+ up, run agound, but they will teach you to run a boat. Pretty good advice. That guy did all of those things and went on to get tolerably good at running boats. I...

To many license' and not enough answers..........help!!

There are licenses that will help you in international employment. The Cayman Islands are problem the most famous license of convenience, but you need a real license first. Get a US or British license and they will rubber stamp a Cayman license. A lot of yacht charters actually prefer a Cayman...
