    Bauer Oceanus?

Does anyone have any experience with or opinions on the Oceanus? Basically a JR II upgraded to run continuous duty to maintain a two bottle bank. Seems like a good fit for what I need, independent instructor with eight Al80s for students. Drex

    Changing Regulator Mouthpiece

In that the under arm routing leads to primary donate and a necklaced backup, it could be ‘advanced’ in some minds. Or at least not consistent with the industry standard of the last 20+ years. It really isn’t basic or advanced, just an option. I hope I didn’t start yet another primary donate...

    Changing Regulator Mouthpiece

If the mouth piece change doesn’t help, check on hose length. The hose may be pushing or pulling the second and you are biting down to hold it in place. Possibly a swivel or routing under your arm with a 40” hose and a 90degree fitting.

    Wanting to go streamlined

Yes, several times in the Caribbean and Florida Keys. And I’m planning a trip to Egypt where I’ll take my SM rig. I have a DR LTZ and the tank rigging uses cam bands. I’ve never had an issue with any boat while traveling, in NC or in NJ. The cylinders are clipped in to the ring bungees, so I...

    Wanting to go streamlined

5’ hose doesn’t work for me at all. Too short to route across the chest and around my neck. And too long to route under my arm. I’m 6’2ish and 225, different sized people may have different results. A 7’ hose doesn’t stow ‘better’ than a 40”, it routes differently and is very good for its...

Deep Diving 108 feet w/ a single AL 80 (Air.) No redundancy.

Not telling you what to do, just clarifying the min gas calcs for others that may not know. This is what I was taught, what I use and how I teach it. But not the only way to do it. Using your normal RMV doesn’t account for stress and increased breathing. Usually you see an increased rate...

Deep Diving 108 feet w/ a single AL 80 (Air.) No redundancy.

For min gas I use an RMV of 1 to account for elevated consumption and it keeps the math simple. At 5atm, 2 divers for 1 minute to sort stuff out = 10cf Average depth of ascent is 65ft or 3atm and the ascent takes 4.3 minutes at 30ft/min = 25.8cf Min gas is 35.8cf Two minute descent, nine...

    Personal Limits to Solo Diving

So far it’s 160ffw on mix, with 20 minutes of deco. But 80-100fsw, 20’ vis, no deco dives have been typical for many years. Self reliant, same ocean type dives.

Weighting When Moving from AL80’s to LP85

I dive an LTZ with 35 pounds of lift. In a full 5mm and 5/3 hooded vest I use no additional weight, except for lights, backup mask, dsmb/reel, etc. I have never felt overweighted even with an al40 for deco. I have OMS lp85s. But even with 3442psi hp100s I am fine. For comparison, in a full...

Deep Diving 108 feet w/ a single AL 80 (Air.) No redundancy.

I’ve been diving NJ wrecks since 1984. Redundancy is required, steels and pony bottles or twins are standard. I guess you could argue that we are not doing ‘normal recreational’ dives here. I can’t speak to other agencies but PADI does not tell new OW divers they can go to 130fsw. From what...

Review Review: Replaceable Neoprene neck seal

I got an OTR Seac suit but had to put smaller boots on it. At 6’2”, 225 I have smallish size 10s. I fully get the idea of diving dry in temperate waters using a shell. And you can layer the thermal protection you need. But if you’re diving cold water I think a neo suit is hard to beat. If...

Review Review: Replaceable Neoprene neck seal

probably right on the size issue. Although, with what people spend on drysuits a little extra effort to fit a neck seal doesn’t seem like a big deal. My impression is that crushed/compressed suits are more common is Europe. Colder water and rougher conditions warrant the suits advantages over...

Review Review: Replaceable Neoprene neck seal

My crushed suit has neoprene neck and wrist seals. I get a little seepage around the wrists but my neck stays dry and warm. I’m not sure why they are not more popular.

MCH? And nitrox stick for an independent

@rcontrera - Thank you. The manual reads as if the auto shutdown and hour meter are integrated in the controller. But these are separate purchases and controller is a simple, logical place to mount them? I did not see a wiring diagram in the manual for the controller. Is it hard wired to a...

MCH? And nitrox stick for an independent

@rcontrera - Sounds good. I don’t three phase and I want to make sure I add auto drain and shut off. What is the advantage to the motor controller? Does this give me auto on and auto off ties to hi/low pressure set points? @tbone1004 - Air it is if I decide on a bank. Thanks.

MCH? And nitrox stick for an independent

Of course! I’m already selling one Harley to pay for this. I’m not letting go of the other one yet. But since this came up... what would you bank? The most common mix or the richest mix? For me it’s 30 or 50%.

MCH? And nitrox stick for an independent

I was thinking you would bank air. To pump nitrox I would have to bypass the bank. Is that not right?

MCH? And nitrox stick for an independent

@tbone1004 - Do you have a low pressure set point for the bank that auto starts the compressor? I don’t know if a jury and V&B (insurance carrier) would see the DIY stick as a ‘non-issue’. I’ll just stick to mixing for myself. I’ll stay up in the maintenance and testing wether it is just me...

MCH? And nitrox stick for an independent

Thanks for the replies. A DIY stick is certainly an option for my own needs. I’m filling an AL40 with 50%, usually 30% in my lp85s and the 100s will get normoxic trimix. But your comment about doing things ‘by the book’ makes lean to PP or a purchased stick. I see a DIY as a potential...

MCH? And nitrox stick for an independent

I am in the market for a compressor. I have the space and I can run 230V single phase to the compressor. My budget is $8k. Right now I’ll be filling cylinders for myself. In the very near term I’ll be operating as an independent instructor. Along with fills for classes, I’ll offer...
