Although Ursula had already cleared the Philippines, the Wind Signal for Batangas was not lifted at 05:00. It took until 11:00 on Dec 26 for it to be lifted so anyone without a house reef lost 2.5 dive days. With more and more storms outside official typhoon season, I cannot stress enough the...
Currently in Anilao. Most Anilao dive sites were not damaged by Typhoon Kammuri, however two were: Secret Bay and Heidi were swept clean of critters and lost some of their bottom structure in the shallows. A guide who lives above Secret Bay said there were very high waves. Hopefully...
Day and night the sea continues to be like glass in Anilao. All day yesterday we had blue skies. Today mostly cloudy but still flat seas. Anilao dive boats and transfers to PG still cancelled. Dive boats in PG seem to be running as usual.
I'm guessing this is what you're referring to...
Local guess is by Dec 26 boats may be running again with the Wind Signal lifted. Apparently there were stranded people accumulating at Batangas port last night and this morning. We're seeing a few scofflaws out on the water but they don't appear to be dive boats.
If anyone else is stranded...
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal 1 was issued for Anilao by 05:00 local time Dec 24. As a result all Anilao dive boats are unable to travel and public and private transfers to PG are cancelled.
It’s still flat calm here in Anilao (10 AM) but apparently the local coast guard cancels all Batangas...
@Ken Kurtis thanks for the update on the housing “tax”.
How long are the dives in Cabo Pulmo when you do them from a liveaboard? Such an interesting area - 4 dives a day from a LOB is already a selling point.
Thanks.
Concolor was the dive op - amazing above and below the water. Kotaro not only made our Hachijo jima trip, he also connected us with a fantastic Izu peninsula guide. Tremendous guy and superb diver and photographer.
He invites his guests to share photos from their dives on the op's Facebook...
@Scandi Divers thanks for this info. Which resorts are running their own transfer boats now? I know Asia Divers/El Galleon does - I take it you do too. Who are the other two?
For those using credit cards there's also an ATM inside El Galleon (at the back of the restaurant) that was working the whole time I was there in March.
There is definitely macro. But I believe most of the species you can see in Okinawa itself (vs the out islands) overlap with the species of Indonesia and the Philippines (I have not been to PNG yet).
For really special macro in Japan, including endemics, I can recommend Izu peninsula. We also...
Thanks very much @HalcyonDaze - I had been wondering if folks flying through Mexico City were getting hit.
If anyone hears info from the Loreto airport I hope they will add it.
Does anyone know if ppl with large soft-sided camera gear backpacks (e.g. Lowepro) and dive bags are being targeted...
From the thread I linked
Now that I have returned from Baja California, Mexico, here is what I know 1st hand. If you fly into Cabo San Lucas or into La Paz, Mexico, expect to pay a fee if the Customs agents stop you and notice that you have an underwater housing. The agent will Google the...
If anyone is flying into Loreto with an underwater camera/video housing, could you please update us on your experience with the new 16% Mexican camera housing tax. Divers flying through CSL and La Paz are definitely being charged per this SB thread. Thank you!
From what I was told by a CSL op I believe the target is pro photographers / videographers who were shooting and reselling footage without permission from the park. My guess would be that rigs that don't appear to be pro rigs are not asked to register. I do not do anything commercial with my...
This is from my dive op for a Dec 2018 trip:
[Cabo] Pulmo has a rule that any camera rig larger than 10inches/25CM has to be registered in advance and get a permit to use it in the park. The size includes arms, strobes, lights, tray, handles etc.. Just a heads up to make sure you let the shop...
