Looking for Dive Buddy in Dayton, OH

I'm a recent transplant to the Cincinnati area and am also interested in diving locally. Just need to get the reg serviced and replace the mask I lost on my last dive  I've been certified for a few years and have about 30 or so dives, most of which were off the beach in the Fort...

    Faber Tanks

I have a 3180+ Faber HP120; if I were buying again and had a choice between the 3180+ and the FX series (3442), I'd have gone with the FX because it's lighter overall and a little closer to neutrally buoyant when empty. The other nice thing about the 3442 is that you don't have to worry about...

    New Instrument Mount Give Away

OK, finally getting around to writing a brief review of this wrist mount after getting it out on a dive. I’m using it with an Oceanic Veo 250, which has a button on the face, one on the side, and a computer cable connection port. This mount is much better than the modified watch-style mount I...

POLL: Do you regularly carry a emergency signaling device ?

Safety sausage, signal mirror, Fox 40 whistle, and I usually have a light with me to peek in crevices anyway.

Turning lights on and off under water

I always thought that this was recommended for dive lights with filaments, since the filaments were most likely to fail when being turned on/off. I often turn my screw on/off LED light (DRIS 1000 lumen) during daytime dives to peek into crevices and haven't had an issue with flooding. I do try...

Upside down regulator - how wet?

I've been in this orientation and inverted like a headstand, and haven't noticed any extra wetness or that it was harder to breathe. My reg is a Tusa RS/130.

    Flag v SMB

Clipping the flag to a D-ring makes me nervous since I dive in an area with a lot of boat traffic and don't want to be taken for an unexpected ride, but I know others are of the opinion that the line will break before anything really awful happens. It's worth checking out this older thread for...

    Malware detected?

I have as well, and I've also had the site picked up as a prohibited site a couple of times through my company's web filter, which hasn't happened before (and isn't happening today).

POLL: What was your first dive computer and would you buy it again?

I have a used Veo 250 that I moved from a console to a wrist boot. I like it and would buy it again. I've only been diving for a couple years, though.

    Zookeeper (LCU) Homemade?

I've seen short (a few feet or so) sections of various diameter PVC pipe at Home Depot from time to time, so you may get lucky and find a 6-inch or 8-inch one instead of having to buy the whole 10 feet (or you could pool together with some friends and make several out of one stick). I think the...

    New from South Florida!

Hi! I'm also a transplant from the Midwest (Northern IL) and I've been here about 8 years. I do most of my diving off the beach with one of two meetup groups: South Florida Beach Divers and Gold Coast Scuba. The SFBD beach dives tend to be better/more reliably attended than GCS, but GCS has a...

    Smartphone Dive Computer

As a rec diver, I'd only consider using my smartphone for a dive computer if the casing/dive computer module manufacturer would guarantee that they would replace my phone if water got in, and had a proven track record of actually following through on that. I do see the merit in having a dive...

    Pompano Drop Off Acropora field?

I've seen that staghorn field on the surface swim out to the Copenhagen from the Sea Watch as well. Usually, the groups that I dive with will call ahead and reserve a spot for lunch, and eat lunch there after the dive so it's a mutual benefit for us and them (and lessens the risk of getting...

2 br on or close to shore dives near LBTS or BHB

It may be worth checking out the Windjammer resort in LBTS... looks like their rack rate for a 2 br is $276/night and sometimes they run specials depending on when and how long you stay. I've never stayed there myself but I use their beach cam all the time to check out conditions before diving. :)

Top 3 suggested spots north and south of Delray Beach.. NEW DIVER :)

The South Florida Beach Divers group South Florida Beach Divers (Hollywood, FL) - Meetup is another good meetup group to check out, they seem to focus more on the Dania/Hollywood area where Gold Coast is more LBTS/Pompano and seems to get better turnout for their boat dives than their beach dives.

Guess it. Win it! .... Smartphone Dive Camera & Computer

It looks like a combination wetsuit hanger and brass knuckles to me. I agree that it looks like something where you'd mount a "new and improved" bluebuddy that has an integrated dive computer in the cradle part and stick your fingers through the holes for a sort of "hands free" finger...

I wish my instructor would have...

+1 on spending more time addressing buoyancy control and propulsion techniques/kicks. On a lighter note, I wish my OW instructor had had a better memory and his own car so we wouldn't have had to drive him to the owner's house when he forgot the key to the shop door, and I wouldn't have had to...

Boot on top of a wetsuit or a wetsuit on top of the boot?

Looks like I'm in the minority, but I prefer boots over suit. I've tried both and my ankles tend to chafe in the zipper area when I tuck 'em in. I've never had them come unzipped and I don't mind the balloon boots (I actually sort of like that for some weird reason).
