    mooring balls

Well AWAP I just happen to be perusing this thread, and will tell you unequivocally and categorically, that if you do this you are in violation of the marine park rules and will be persona non grata on the island and with anyone I know in the local dive community. Rest assured, if I personally...

Unseasonably cold temperatures in Bonaire right now

Well stated. We were down for three months last winter and never had a problem. Water temps were consistently 79 to 80 F. If someone had a temp of 75, my guess is that they were caught in an upwell from the depths. Absolutely transitory. It can happen on occasion. Looking forward to being down...

Ha..and you only mentioned food. Don't forget water, electric, furniture, gas, cars and taxes.

Suzuki Jimny OK for Slagbaai? (not for diving)

A Suzuki Jimny would be my preference vehicle over a truck. Most of the trucks I've ever seen rented are NOT 4 WD. The Suzuki Jimny has a switch inside where you can change to 4WD if you need it and then back to 2 WD for better economy. It also has great clearance. Most folks rent the trucks...

    OK to miss Klein Bonaire?

Just as there are many many sites on Bonaire to shore dive, there are also many many sites on Klein Bonaire. Each site has something varied to offer. So the simple answer would be yes, however if you're only down for a week or so it really makes little difference in the scheme of things...

    water temp and vis

Water temp is between 79 & 80 F.. Viz varies on a daily basis. What is was a week ago has no real bearing on what it will be when you're here. Viz will vary between 60 ft to 120 ft depends on where you dive, winds, currents etc. All change on a daily basis.

    Booties for Bonaire

Should work fine. My only issue is I see no reason for 5 mil since the water temp is 80 degrees.Extra neoprene translates into extra weights. Personally I try to use as little as possible.

    Bonaire 'survival' advice please!

From my own experiences the condo type accommodations are the way to go. When you get down head over to Van Der Tweel or the Warehouse and pick up some coffee, milk and some fast breakfast supplies. You also may want to purchase some cold cuts and bread for lunch. You'll find many restaurants...

First time in Bonaire - Night dive and restaurant questions

We eat at Joe's Grillhouse at least once a week. Great soups, ribs, burgers etc. Prices are reasonable. Make reservations in Jan. We'll be there!

Do I really need a car?

Hmmm Is it just possible that whoever gave you this advice doesn't have a clue as to what they're talking about? Auto insurance policies in the states use standard ISO forms. There is no US auto insurance company that will pay for damage to a truck or a liability exposure on Bonaire. If you do...

Do I really need a car?

If you are a party of two, forget the truck and rent a Suzuki Jimny. You'll have room for 2 tanks and dive equipmt, PLUS you'll also have 4 wheel drive (most of the trucks are rear wheel drive). Additionally you'll also be able to park in town which is much more problematic for the trucks.

    Thinking of Going to Bonaire!

Well if you can afford it, I'd advise you stay at Harbour Village. They have a great beach, great food and is pretty well self contained. I'd say it's the most luxurious resort on the island. We go there for "special occasions". Any diving you do while staying there should be on their boat as...

Bonaire site recommendations for my first and last trip

CS..I do look forward to reading your trip report when you return. As far as suggesting dive sites I think the aforementioned suggestions are indeed good ones to give you a taste (and that's all you will receive in a short week) of what Bonaire has to offer. Me? I've spent some 40 years...

tips for Bonaire newbies traveling with Bonaire veterans?

bug spray and a high SPF sunblock. If you plan on diving a lot, go to the local botika in town and purchase several bottles of diver drops and use prophylactically.

    shore diving made easy?.....seriously????

There is really no way you can put Bonaire in the same category as Jamaica. Trust me on this.

    Dinner ?

Special night on Bonaire? No comparison ot the other suggestions; take her to Harbour Village and have a great meal on the beach. Call and make reservations. Expensive but worth it.

    Live to dive

Bill: Personally I think there's a lot of truth in this posting. This is relevant no matter what island you visit or plan to live on. Island fever is a very real phenomena. Fortunately for me I realized this fact decades ago. I LOVE the Caribbean and the ocean, but there is no way I could ever...

    Truck crime ?

Well I've been in risk management for some 30 years, normally getting involved after a loss. From what I've seen , generally speaking of course, the beach dive sites up north are more problematic than down south. We normally dive the northern dive sites in the morning, but this has nothing to do...

Planning the next trip and want it to be EPIC!!

Well you've chosen the right dive guide. Bas T knows more "far out" off beat shore dive locations than anyone I know on the island. Just follow his recommendations and enjoy your diving.

    Trip Report August 9-16

Just to correct what appears to be some disinformation, there is absolutely nothing illegal about sport fishing with a rod and reel off the coast of Bonaire. Since STINAPA has the task to enforce marine park rules and regulations, I really don't know what you'd expect them to do regarding a...
