    Diving with a Bad Back

I originally injured it in 2015 and it was bad...required surgery. In 2019 I reinjured it at a trampoline park (in hindsight, a total idiot move on my part, but it felt so good for so long after the surgery that I thought I was in the clear). This injury wasn't as bad and I tried all sorts of...

    Diving with a Bad Back

I would hold off until you're better. I tried to dive a month or two after herniating a disc about 5 years ago and found the motion of diving (kicking, arching my back slightly without thinking about it) made things much worse. I had to call the dive after 20 minutes.

Question How does Cozumel compare to other dive destinations?

In the Caribbean, I would rank Cozumel close to Turks & Caicos (LOB about a decade ago) and Cayman Brac (about 8 years ago). I'd probably rank it ahead of all the other places I've been: Bahamas, Roatan, Curacao, Bonaire, St. Lucia, Grenada, Florida. I list the years I was in T&C and Cayman as I...

Divemasters in Cozumel (and specifically with Dressel Divers)

My wife and dove with Dressel in May last year and February this year. The boats have a lot of people on them, no doubt, but they are also very large boats and we didn't have any issues in terms of space. Typically there were three groups with 6-8 divers each. That being said, we had only four...

Question Maldives Liveaboard Back-to-Back OR Liveaboard & Resort?

Another option, if you're open to something other than diving, is Sri Lanka, which is only an inexpensive 90 minute flight away from Male. My wife and I are doing that in combination with a Maldives liveaboard in a few weeks. I've never been to either before, but Sri Lanka is famous for its...

Success!! Everything (but tanks) in carry-on

Impressive...but what about clothes and toiletries? Even when packing "light" the gear for my wife and I ends up being a 45-50lb rolling duffle, two pilot cases and a carry-on backpack...plus another backpack for my underwater camera setup. Wish we could shave some weight off, but we'd have to...

What's going on with the weather?

I'm in the same boat (or I guess not in the boat, if there's Nortes :crying:). For those familiar with such things, do the Nortes affect the southern resorts the same as dive shops in/near Cozumel town? I'll be down at Iberostar, which is pretty close to the point where the island starts to...

    Carpe Vita - Maldives - Dec 30, 2023 - Jan 6, 2024

Thanks for this trip report! My wife and I will be on the Carpe Vita this April, so it's great to see your positive comments about the staff and boat. I'm hoping we get a good group like you had - makes a huge difference in the trip.

    Taxi From Airport

Thanks cvchief and NDL_Diver. I'm heading to Cozumel next month and this info is really helpful.

Iberostar or Villa Aldora for family with non-diving kids?

During our trip there in May 2023 we averaged about 60 minutes for the first two dives and 53 minutes for the third. That's total time, not bottom time, but still...no complaints here about excessively short dives.

Iberostar or Villa Aldora for family with non-diving kids?

We saw them almost daily, usually on the way to or from the dive shop. I've seen references to them in various reviews, so I assume they are there long-term. I wouldn't call them "semi-tame" though, as they scurry away quickly if you get too close. I loved seeing them, makes you feel like you're...

Iberostar or Villa Aldora for family with non-diving kids?

I agree with the sentiment in the last couple posts. There's nothing to be bummed out about by staying at Iberostar. My wife and I don't have kids and loved our stay there in May. We're already planning our return trip. Your kids are old enough you can probably bargain with them...kids club for...

August 2023 trip report and many, many pictures

Really nice work - thanks so much for posting this report! I bookmarked it as my official "fish ID" resource for my next trip to Cozumel.

    Iberostar vs Westin

My wife and I stayed at the Iberostar in May and really enjoyed it. Enough that it may well become our new "go to" for easy/short dive trips. Not familiar with the Westin. I think a big consideration is whether your friends will be content hanging out at the resort all day, or whether they are...

Is TG-6 an upgrade from E-PL1?

Thanks for the thoughtful reply, Dann. Would be an easier cost/benefit analysis if my existing ZEN dome could be used with the new camera, but clearly that's not the case.

Is TG-6 an upgrade from E-PL1?

I currently have an old E-PL1 setup which includes an Inon S2000 strobe, a ZEN wide angle lens and a macro diopter and have gotten some really nice pics from it (often after a bit of Lightroom work). I'm interested in the TG-6 as a potential replacement. Main reasons are 1) bigger and better...

    Current Water Temps

Anyone have any recent water temperature readings at depth (20 meters/60 feet)? Finally getting back in the water after covid and back issues kept me out the last few years.

Ice Diving on the Wreck of U.S. La Vallee (Lake Champlain, VT)

Thanks for sharing - really nicely done video, especially with the historical background and extra drone footage. Wish all scuba videos were this well produced! James

Just the two of us.... on a Liveaboard

Interesting situation, as I agree most boats would cancel the trip or try to get a few more passengers by offering a discount. Hopefully the crew are engaging. I'd try to stock up on reading materials if you have the opportunity. I say enjoy the relaxation. If nothing else, this is a great time...

    First Liveaboard T & C Explorer 2

Vic K, as others have noted, you made a great choice. That was the first liveaboard for my wife and me too. We liked it so much we did it twice - once on the T&C itinerary and once on the Bahamas itinerary (not sure if they still do that one). It's one of my favorite boats in terms of layout...
