Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

This seems like a brilliantly simple way to make a difference that matters.

Search and Rescue - Scubaboard Staff Member - Northernone - Missing in Cozumel

That's really good, @RayfromTX. Wherever Cameron is, I hope he can feel the intense caring that is coming to him from so very many people.

Dry- cotton mouth, parched throat - solutions

This is decidedly low-tech and free--it has always worked like a charm for me. As soon as I notice myself getting dry (I seldom remember to do it preventatively), I start moving my tongue all around in my mouth. This is hard at first because everything is kind of dry and sticky, but it seems to...

Will need a little more warmth

If you're diving wet, get more protection than you think you'll need. You can easily cool off by opening zippers if necessary but if you get cold, there's nothing you can do to warm up. Diving while cold is no fun, and not safe.

Start with 7mm or just get drysuit

As someone who dove a 7mm suit for several years, I never looked back once I started diving dry. It's not just way warmer, it's also a lot easier.

Any advice for first night dive?

Whenever you feel ready and excited (not intimidated) to go, watch the speed of your descent. If you don't have a stable visual reference all the way down (like a mooring line if you're diving from a boat), keep a very close watch on your depth reading as you descend. I just about blew my...

Anything you don't like about BP/W rig?

Have you tried one yet? The only con I can think of is if you're one of the few people (like me) who simply doesn't like the rig. It might be worth a test drive just to be sure before you buy, then buy it from the shop that you let you try one, of course.

    Latex socks under wetsuit boots?

Ditto what @Marie13 said, especially about the drysuit.

    Mistakes on first "real" dives

My first impression is that the operator is pretty slack in their practices. I hope you can find someone more conscientious your next time out. In the meantime, congratulations on active personal awareness and self-assessment.

    Managing the Urge to Overeat

Your post shows a lot of insight. Your final statement nicely describes the problem that I address in "Why We Overeat and How to Stop."

12 boys lost in flooded Thai cave

I'm sure that regardless of how it gets written up by reporters who don't fully understand what they're writing about, the people on-site are doing what makes sense.

    Getting cold in a 5mm below 26C (79F)

Mel, you remind me of me. I chased it for years, starting with a 3/2 mil wetsuit, then a 7 mil, heavier hoods, gloves. When the sheer burden of all the neoprene became too much and I was still getting cold doing repetitive dives in tropical waters, I finally gave in and got a dry suit. Finally...

Question for tropical divers: Gloves or no gloves

How about sea lice? After a week of liveaboard diving without gloves, my hands (my only exposed skin) will be covered with blisters and sores that are so itchy I want to rip my own skin off. Gloves almost eliminate this problem. Most people aren't as prone to this as I am but trust me, for those...

    Managing the Urge to Overeat

I write wellness columns for Scuba and H2O Adventure Magazine, and would like to share this article of mine from the April issue: SCUBA and H2O Adventure SCUBA and H2O Adventure Magazine April 2018 Edition I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on the content.

To kill or not to kill lionfish in the Caribbean and Florida?

I'm all for eradicating lionfish, but very concerned at the changes in reef shark behavior that I've noticed where lionfish hunting is encouraged, even without encouraging the sharks to eat the bodies. Previously benign sharks ("I'll do my thing, you do yours.") have become aggressive bullies...

Drying boots of flooded drysuit - solutions?

I just hang it upside down by the boots with this kind of hanger, and place a small fan or--if the garage is cold--a small electric heater a couple feet in front of it so that dry air will waft up into the legs and feet. Works really well and surprisingly quickly.

Keeping Your New Year's Fitness Resolution

Music is really good for powering a workout, particularly music that makes you feel like dancing. Better yet when you put your favorites through some music-editing software to get it to the right speed, matching the cadence of what you like to do. My experience has been that you can push a song...

Severe soft tissue infection, presumed related to rental wetsuit

It seems like it would be a good idea, if you must rent gear of any kind, to check ahead of time as to the op's cleaning/drying/storage procedures. Hopefully, you hear that they have such procedures and that they sound serious about protecting their clients from risks like this.

Keeping Your New Year's Fitness Resolution

I work with people on this sort of thing for a living, and this is all really sound. The only thing I'd add is to try to back off of the New Year's Resolution angle, since those so famously go away shortly after New Year's anyway. I suggest thinking about the life that you really want to live...

    Biggest thing killing dive shops?

Same here. I was always so thrilled by being neutral that I thought the surroundings were less important than it turns out they actually were. The last times I was at my favorite places, I was looking around thinking, "Where is everybody?" (meaning critters). It was still blue and pretty and all...
